Anti-war protesters chant "war criminal" at Rice
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, March 12 (Reuters) - Chanting "war criminal," anti-war protesters waved blood-colored hands at U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday, but police held them back as she left a Capitol Hill hearing room.

Earlier, Republicans had complained about the distraction from the group as they held up signs saying "Condi Kills Kids" during the hearing on the State Department budget.

But the chairman of the House of Representatives committee, a New York Democrat, declined to eject the protesters.

"We're here in the United States of America. And as long as they don't disrupt this proceeding and as long as they're silent, they will be welcome," said Rep. Nita Lowey, who runs the subcommittee overseeing State Department appropriations.

"But they may not stand and they may not disrupt the proceedings."

it ranks up there with the pictures of Nicolai Ceaucescu (please forgive any misspelling) realizing that his wristwatch WASN'T going to function as some sort of beacon, summoning rescuers. It's the look of someone who knows she can't get away with it anymore. At least not nearly as easily as before.

116. Name one other group that has been as vocal, visible and vigilant
in calling for an end to this horrific war. These women started November 2002 in front of the White House and have continued calling for an end to the killing for 5-1/2years. It is their theatrics, boldness and relentlessness that get the message in such unlikely venues as C-Span and MSM.

The cause of CODEPINK is to bring an end to the War in Iraq. So I'm just wondering if you do not share the same cause then what is yours?

118. And thats too bad
What do they do to end the war?

They get the message out? Where have you been? I think the idea of getting out of Iraq was pretty much part of the public discourse from the moment we entered Iraq. Just because you wear a funny hat doesn't make your argument more effective.

Or does it?

If you are going to do theater, do something subtle or really dramatic which makes people do a double take and say "wow that is really ironic" "so true" "I never thought of that" "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more" etc.

They are either preaching to the choir or giving the war mongers more grist for their mill. I can just hear O'Really "See how wacko these peace activists are, despicable despicable" And people watching his show myself included would have to agree with him that it is really lame. BTW, I never could sit through this entire show. I don't know what people see in it, it is so god-awful boring.

11. More from the article
" Rice ignored the protesters. Several plainclothes police officers and uniformed Capitol Hill police watched them warily.

"I am embarrassed for the entire committee," said Rep. Jerry Lewis, a California Republican.

"I hope we never do this to the likes of you again," he told Rice. "

60. Also look at the actions of those in congress that gave away their...
congressional power to bush when he was beating war drums. They are all a part of the same agenda and for some reason the American public falls for the nonsense and only blames a certain few.

Never forget that people like Dennis Kucinich, stood up and said that the evidence was outdated, there was no reason to go to war and that it had to do with oil. They all heard him, they all had the same evidence if not more, depending on who it was and they gave away the power to vote for war. They did it that way so they could blame the evil side and the American sheeple would go along...I see way too many posts around here where people think this was a bush thing or a cheney thing...WRONG!

The evidence for war wasn't their, few spoke out about it and the rest followed bush through with their agenda. I am so sick of shepple thinking that a letter in front of someones name tells you who they are and what they are about. Look at the facts folks!

110. Maybe so, maybe so, but...
the Thugs lost Congress in '06, in very large part due to the public's rejection of Bush's war. I would think that would set off major "job security" bells and whistles for these guys, but they continue to fetish the war as if it were a holy crusade, and continue to hold up Preznint Chucklenuts as if he were Julius W Caesar. I just don't get it.

Ahhh, poor Rep. Lewis is embarrassed.

The whole God-damn country is embarrassed that this slimy war-criminal is still running around free instead of being punished for her crimes.

Embarrassed ... we should be hounding these damn people wherever they go, morning, noon and night. We should make it impossible for them to go anywhere or do anything without constantly getting in their faces.

Use zip code 10605 to contact her - she doesn't accept email from outside her district.

It's good to see someone stand up against free speech zones.

Here is what I sent:

I am not a constituent within your district, but I heard today that you stood up for protesters speaking against U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a meeting today:

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N12204353.htm

I have grown very weary of protesters being forced into nice, tidy "free speech zones" where they are quietly out of the way. I am so glad to see you stand up for people peaceably protesting.

Thank you for standing up for freedom.

One must be outrageous to get noticed any more. Mass protests no longer work apparently. We have all seen crowds filling Washington our whole lives supporting or protesting this or that. It is old news. It has to be the man bites dog approach or a protest will be ignored and forgotten.

Upping the ante isn't going to get political discourse to actually work in the interests of the people.

73. When did the political discourse EVER work in the interest of the people?
Certainly not since the war criminal was selected in 2000. And not often before that.

It's time to make noise and DEMAND representation. Being polite hasn't accomplished a damn thing.

79. The conservatives have enjoyed our politeness.
They count on us to play by the rules that they break every day. They count on us to come to them like oliver asking for a little more. They sneer at any kind of attempt at working with them. They see us as the enemy and we already know that they will let the world burn down before they will even talk much less compromise.

We are dealing with the most unreasonable political group in our history. They do not even see the poor as people. They see soldiers as tools rather than feeling human beings. They see all islamic people as terrorists. They call everyone who disagrees traitors.

You are saying that being reasonable works on people who have abandoned reason long ago, and would sacrifice any of our lives to get what they want.

Getting in their face and being just as difficult is the only way to gain our cause. As long as we treat them as the boss they will be the boss.

75. Well, then maybe YOU should come up with some better suggestions
for us. What is it that you are doing to stop the war while we CodePinkers are out there putting our asses on the line? Please tell me just exactly what your plan to end the war is since it's obviously SO MUCH better and more effective than anything we've thought of. Please tell us what it is that we can do that will be effective and not "absurd." Since you obviously must be out there doing things that are working better than our plans, please share what you do with us so that we can be as effective as you are. Thank you.

You know, I really don't know how to end this war. But I'm just saying that as someone who agrees with what you're saying, I just feel the way you're saying it doesn't translate well through the lens of the media.

93. You didn't answer the question -
what do you DO? You feel as if you have the right to criticize those people who are the only ones I see besides the veterans out there doing anything to bring attention to the facts and make people aware, but you don't say what it is that you are doing that we haven't already tried ourselves in the last five years. If you aren't doing something that we haven't done then you simply do not have the right to be critical. If you can suggest a better way to bring attention to the fact that our leaders DO have the blood of a million people on their hands and make people get it, then tell us what it is. If you aren't out there physically doing something or you don't have any better ideas, then you owe us an apology and you need to just be quiet.

100. Not politically correct enough for you?
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 03:07 AM by hamnose
"you need to just be quiet." Oh really? Not politically correct enough for you? What the hell do you DO that gives you the right to talk to another person this way. What the hell do you DO which should give you our silent respect? Oh you wear a funny hat when you criticize the war? Paint your hands red? Do you really think that anyone outside your circle has anything but contempt for you? You should think of joining the republican party with that attitude. I'd much rather hear what she has to say than your tripe. A cogent rational calmly expressed argument does a lot more than your pointless theatrics and self congratulation. At least this person has a bit of honesty and decency to admit how overwhelming the whole situation is. You don't know this person. I'm sure she has a life and thus is in contact with other human beings and perhaps has more impact than you. DO you have a life, a job a family? If you DO maybe you should work on that first. I've educated and been educated sharing a thing called knowledge, its effective. In case you are unaware people all over the country are discussing these issues and you do not help. In fact the only reason the democratic party does not always have an overwhelming majority is that most of us in this country can't stomach people like you. Thanks for hitching your painted wagon to this party. So give yourself another medal, don't expect praise from me and we'll say anything we damn well want to say. "you need to just be quiet."

114. Of course I have the right.
Here's a suggestion. Go and protest, but drop the red hands, the pink shirts, and the screaming. And don't tell me that I should be quiet. I have the right to do whatever I want. In addition, I thought I made it clear that I admired your courage for getting out there, but don't think it's the right tactic.

72. Wrong-o.
Pelosi has passed anti-war legislation, Reid is unable to get a working majority (60+ votes) to get that Senate through the house because of the damn filibuster. It's not weakness or spinelessness. The Republicans are the enemy. Not Pelosi. Can you imagine Pelosi getting up on the Speaker's chair, banging her gavel and screaming and moaning with ketchup all over her hands? She'd be mocked.

As for Clinton, I will not defend her.

101. Right-o
Really these pollyannas think that they can just hold their breath and the whole world is going to come around and see things their way. They are incapable of taking into account simple facts. Like the fact that without a 60% majority a lot of things aren't going to just magically happen in congress. Just ask Hilary for her dour assessment.

So how do you like the banter so far? Some of the people on this board aren't very open or democratic minded are they? And they're usually the ones who fancy themselves left wing, revolutionary, free thinkers or whatever. But they're out there fighting the good fight for us no-accounts putting there lives on the line and risking all kinds of hell even if it means going to Wash. D.C. and painting their hands red. Gee thanks freedom fighters. we are so unworthy of you.

This board is infested with intellectual fascists. Welcome to the fray.

99. yuck...
I agree it looks ridiculous but hippies were cool. I'm old and I remember the sixties. I went to the Moratorium in D.C. for example (well the 70's okay). I also saw the movie Forrest Gump with its stereotypes of that event and I have to say the movie wasn't very accurate. We had a lot of theatre and some of it pretty corny but generally not as lame and self-righteous as what we see here. It seems people like Code Pink got their image from the media and are trying to recapture that lost era by acting out that image. I'd be embarrassed to be seen with them. They are so retro but it isn't even accurate retro.

peacemongers, preachers of love and not hate? go hippies.
make peace not war.

any talk of peace gives fodder to propagandists. and if they don't have talk of peace to chew on, they bring on the fear. they never quit and they never will until people stop tuning in. and without people like Code Pink to let the people tuning in know that there actually IS another side to the story they will keep buying the fear.

right on code pink.
peace.

94. These histrionics are not going to stop the war
They prolong it. People see this and immediately think of how much worse things might be if Code Pink had any political power. Talk show idiots like O'Really or Limbo point to this and say see folks I told you so and Joe Sixpack says yeah I see what you mean! It reminds me of the counterfeit stories of veterans being spit on during the Viet Nam war. I was a vet at that time, nobody spit on me but I think these Code Pink freaks have been fed this right wing propaganda about the sixties and want to measure up to this false image of that era like some kind of rebellious teenager. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them did spit on me. Listen up people, we need to support real radicals with real courage. Not a bunch of people posing for the nightly news and living in a dream world. One Lt. Ehren Watada is more effective than a million of these cadburies.
