Scruggs Pleads Guilty
By ASHBY JONES
March 14, 2008 12:01 p.m.

Famed Mississippi plaintiffs lawyer Richard "Dickie" Scruggs this morning pleaded guilty to a bribery-related charge.

Mr. Scruggs was indicted, along with four others, in November of last year for conspiring to bribe a Mississippi judge Henry Lackey. Federal prosecutors alleged that Mr. Scruggs had participated in a scheme to pay Judge Lackey $40,000 in exchange for a favorable ruling in a fee-dispute case. One alleged co-conspirator pleaded guilty last December, and another pleaded guilty in January.

1. better headline: (Trent Lott's) Brother-in-Law Pleads Guilty (to bribery)
http://cbs4.com/national/trent.lott.richard.2.677178.html

OXFORD, Miss (CBS4.com) ― Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott's brother-in-law has pleaded guilty of trying to bribe a Mississippi judge. Attorney Richard Scruggs entered his guilty plea to conspiracy charges on Friday.

He offered a bribe of $50,000 to Mississippi judge Henry L. Lackey in the judges chambers. Lackey was not indicted on the charge due to his cooperation with federal investigators.

Scruggs was disputing the attorney's fees for working on a lawsuit against State Farm Insurance Company in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

7. yes....see this Wiki..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Scruggs

Sued ritalin issues, too.

Isn't a strange "co-incidence" that all these significant democrats
( Scruggs, Seiglmen, even Spitzer) are suddenly going down?

Rove has been active here in Ala. and in Miss. where Scruggs is.

6. Sounds like the same story which was done to the class action lawyer Lerach
Lerach represented class action suits against corrupt businessmen.

Lerach is now going to jail for two years because he paid a witness.

These crime fighters have to learn that they cannot play fast and loose with the rules because you know the Chamber of Commerce cartel will be after their butts.

4. For the most complete information on this story - it's history and
the ongoing pleas and pleadings, see www.folo.us.

Today's news crashed folo's servers, as well as another Southern-Lawyer blog (along with 50 law firms on the same server) but as soon as it's back up, folo is the place to follow this story.

It also has some fine old Mississippi story telling and lots of good recipes for Southern cooking - home and otherwise.
