<snip>

President Bush on Tuesday stepped up efforts to calm the dispute over transition to self-rule in Iraq, calling in a Shiite leader and also the president of the Iraqi governing council in a search for a compromise formula to end the U.S. occupation by July 1.

Bush said he still hoped that timetable would hold, while Secretary of State Colin Powell said at the State Department that no specific plan to address Shiite demands for direct elections had been found.

"We want refinements that make sense and get the support of all the parties," Powell said at a news conference.

Bush's meeting with Shiite and Sunni leaders at the White House underscored the administration's determination to fashion an agreeable arrangement -- and keep the July deadline intact.

...... This ought to be swell... :eyes:

3. This is up for interpretation.....
<On a day virtually reserved for preparing his State of the Union speech, Bush got directly involved in the thorny issue that has prompted thousands of al-Sistani's followers to protest in the streets in recent days.

"We discussed the situation in Iraq, Iraq-American relations and our plans for the future of Iraq -- our efforts to create a viable and sturdy democracy in Iraq based on the rule of law and the quality of all citizens," Pachachi said. "We also discussed the process by which we hope to achieve full sovereignty by the 30th of June and the transfer of power to an Iraqi provisional government." >

...... I believe what bush* said is "We better have a fucking ceremony handing you the keys to Iraq by Summer. I won't have my coronation, I mean election ,fucked up by you or any other brown person."

6. Look out!!!
The shit is falling apart fast in Iraq. I don't think the Shia are pushovers and they are not going to quit. If Bush thought the Baathists party and their Sunni supporters were tough...just wait for the Shites to organize more ...and they have the numbers. We now know that the only weapons of mass destruction in Iraq are in the hands of the US military. this first order of business will be to disarm the occupiers and use their own weapons against them. Training Iraqi security forces is the means to this end. Just watch!

7. Plans
This must have been a possible scenerio of the atermath of the invasion, no? I believe that the possible seperation of Iraq into three territories must have been a possible outcome in the planning for expansion of US business; oil and other resources, privatization of US industries and another labor market for the US.

Where are most of the high level oil fields located?

9. Iraq governing council doing their best NOT to be in Iraq...as the
situation implodes over there...

those council members probably really enjoy the food, the clean running water, the electricity and the flushing toilets here in DC....plus, it's likely they won't be killed here in DC....

don't expect many of the Iraq governing council to return to Iraq any time soon....
