32. I was thrilled that they applauded the expiration of the 'Patriot' Act
That showed more courage than the lukewarm response afterward.

I wonder if any Republicans also applauded? I know some are against it.

19. what he said
war, war, terror, terror, the occupied countries we freed, and a few other lies thrown in. A complete farce with acting skills that are below par. A phoney with half the speech dedicated to war, killing, terror, threats, doom, and fear. Fascist is and was my first impression, and my husband agree.

47. He was quite Orwellian tonight.
He even said "Big Brother(s) and Big Sister(s)" I'm starting to think that this administration is attempting to control the public thought process as Hitler did. He is perverting the word "freedom" as a means to justify global dominance, Yet he attempts to manipulate the people, and the world by saying, "We have no ambitions of empire." Yet he forgets we, fully 5% of the Earth's population, dominate 70% of the planets wealth and resources. And yet, we, the people of the United States, share only 5% of our county's wealth. The vast majority goes to the 5% on top. and out of that, the top 1% control around 70% of the top. Bush should begin his addresses with "We the few."

I mean how can Bush say there are no plans for Empire or world domination when Cheney sends out Christmas cards that imply it must be God's will that American be an empire? Wtf?

52. I watched it and took notes. But...
about 2/3erds of the way in, my wife started to freak out, she couldn't take it anymore, she shouted, "I hate him, I hate him, I can't stand to hear is puny lying voice and watch his bee-die eyes anymore!" She had to leave the room. Yes it was quite sickening, especially the part about health insurance bank accounts and bogus little tax breaks on workers who pay for their health care. This got me real sick to my stomach. Imagine, Your company tells everyone that each employee must pay $300, $400, 500$ a month for health care, because now, you can use it as a tax write off. Wow, what a cool deal, so if I'm out of college and make 24K a year, I can pay $4,000 dollars for health care and save, what $350, $500 a year on Fed taxes that I barely pay for at 24k anyway. The said part is, people will and do fall for this Bushit.

25. It sucked...but what was up with the Nancy and Tom show?
Bush was boring and inept...same as always.
My real question is what posesses the democrats to put up the likes of the ever grinning Nancy and Tom? Nancy looked like she was on something to keep that over animated expression on her face....Tom played that sugar sweet sappiness to the hilt...it didn't reflect the tenor of "what" they were saying. The whole show, from Bush to Daschle seemed like a hysterically funny SNL skit.

it has something to do with teaching physics and chemistry in schools :)

Or it's what one of my math profs called Proof by Blatant Assertion: if you say something often enough and loud enough it becomes true. IIRC Orwell called this The Big Lie

What's next: dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities plans? dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities plan outlines?....I can go on ad nauseam

Frankly, I think it's * not wanting to admit he was wrong (note attempt to be polite here) and back-peddling just a leeeetttle bit on the wording. Sorta like that aircraft carrier banner....

Oo-Oo, Ah-Ah, Tooki-Tooki!

If 100 Chimps randomly typed on 100 typewriters for 100 years, it is believed they still would not be able to write a SOTU...regardless of the fact that each Chimp would have an electronic microphone in its ear receiving all the words in the English language from a remote ROVEr verbal communication device.

The man is an idiot. He kept slurring his words...even pronounced abstinence as abschtinunch.

23. Didn’t watch it….waiting for the commentary…
But…judging from the USA article, no real change…

He’s not for equality, i.e., marriage, which runs counter to our Constitution.

Still into a so-called religious sexual abstinence, which we all know doesn’t work…being aware of your body and freely talking about it….I think can work…
But then, there’s that damnation thingie that seems to be more important than knowledge <rolling eyes>

Commander-in-chief??? Did he show up in a flight suit with a sock??? He’s nothing more than a disengaged AWOL POS who slipped in thought a subtle (well, nevermind) coup-de-tat.

"We are dealing with these thugs in Iraq just as surely as we dealt with Saddam Hussein's evil regime,"………out with the old…in with the new….

“weapons of mass destruction programs”……ahhhh yes…that intellectual capacity thingie again and that 10 year relic buried in a flower garden….damn that was a close call…

“America has always been willing to do what it takes for what is right."….except when there is money involved…..party indifference….

Bush urged Congress to address the rising costs of health care with tax-free savings accounts for medical expenses, tax credits to pay for insurance and ceilings on medical malpractice damage awards. ……money market account = say 1%....premium inflation=say 26%.....yeah, that’s the ticket you fucking moron….it may work for the dittofuckingheads…….

Nevermind…I’ve had my say…

26. So many lies. It was unbelievable
The rerun of all the lies about how dangerous Saddam was and how he had all these dangerous weapons programs was just amazing. How he can stand there and make these obvious lies is unbelievable The best part was the closeups of Ted Kennedy's face. He was shaking his head with his eyes rolled, looking absolutely disgusted at tthe level of bull shit being prepetrated on the American people.

Bush twisted the truth in so many ways it just leaves me speechless.
But I was really looking forward to the Democratic rebuttal, and I was grossly disappointed. Nancy Pelosi looked like more of a puppet than Dimwit himself, a rare feat. Tom was a little more expressive but not much. Don't these folks know you have to look alive out there, with some passion, not like a wooden marionette. What a huge disappointment.

49. Ted Kennedy...
heck yeah, he most definatly expressed his opinion when the camera came his way. Good for him, I like to see that and you don't see much of that in these formal, official things.

Gotta agree, the follow-up needed a little more "BANG". But it's pre-recorded. There was plenty to pick apart on Bush's speech that had very little to do with "The State of the Union" and he should get ripped to shreds in the next few days. I doubt he'll see the usual election year SOFTU "bounce". People are pissed about the economy, jobs, health care --- their very lives, and DingDong barely touched the things that matter to middle class Americans. He'll get burned at the polls in a bad economy for his obvious eliteism.

51. Here is part of peech:
"Some critics have said our duties in Iraq must be internationalized. This particular criticism is hard to explain to our partners in Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, the Netherlands, Norway, El Salvador and the 17 other countries that have committed troops to Iraq. As we debate at home, we must never ignore the vital contributions of our international partners or dismiss their sacrifices. From the beginning, America has sought international support for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and we have gained much support. There is a difference, however, between leading a coalition of many nations and submitting to the objections of a few. America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people."

All of those country believed in internationalizing the Iraq debacle before we went to war. Just ask the british, australians, japanese, south koreans, philipinos, thailanese, italians, spanish, polish, hungarians, bulgarians, ukranians, romanaians, people from the netherlands, norwegians, salvadorians, turkish and the whole world over.

I guess we can dismiss all of their opinions. The majority of the world and not the few as Bush belives.

America does not need a permission slip to bully the world, that was proved in this administration.

Their days are numbered....

Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 12:45 AM by Entente
The state of the union was bearable only b/c I was w the young dems of my state and we all made our opinions known the whole time.

Let's just say we were not buying any bull from this man who has proven everyday why we did not vote for him.

58. I'm wondering if he had a couple of belts before he went out there.
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 01:28 AM by calimary
Quite a few slurs and fumfering of lines:

"...security partment"
"...businesses are oping."
"...drug trafferkers"
SEVERAL "nuculer"s
"...weapons of mass destru-destruction"
"...a higher standard from our friend" - we have only one left by now.
"...third cort-quarter"
"...highly skilled fillds" (could that be fields?"
"...series of measure-measures"
"...needless fedrual-federal regulation"
"...unseen pillars of civilization" - slurred that one.
"...lawn forcement" - new priority for the Interior Department?
"...an additional 23 millions"
"...so skeel-schools can teach..."
"...shildin" (translation: children)
"...America, the land of second chance"
"...Ashley Pearson, aged 2, aged 10" (which is it, george?)

Can't read my writing but there was at least one more.

TWO unauthorized rounds of applause:
1) when he said the Patriot Act was going to expire next year - piss-ant facial expression in reaction,
2) when he mentioned that tax cuts are going to expire next year."

Also, FOUR mentions of the word "compassion" - the first one coming at 6:12, just a few minutes into the speech, and the last at 7:01 (pacific time, that is).

Also, three cuts over to Ted Kennedy, who was shaking his head in disbelief - GO TED!!!

Hilarious "Simon Sez" effect when camera showed reactions - with Dennis Hastert dutifully rose to give his lordship a standing ovation, and everybody on the republi-CON side mindlessly obeyed. Everyone on the Democratic side stayed seated. MULTIPLE TIMES. YAY!!!

I don't recall too many cases in which people actively refused to respond, and so many people resolutely stayed seated in the face of presumably compulsory standing ovations. It was GREAT to see the contrary side of Democrats coming out so visibly. Also the lukewarm applause some of them gave. Lots of frenzied hand-clapping on the republi-CON side, while many of the Dems just sat there. GREAT!!!!

And so now we're gonna start getting serious about friggin' steroid use, 'eh? And rehabilitating prisoners, 'eh? Bigtime priorities and bigtime spending opportunities, 'eh?

He also seemed to be going out of his way to overcompensate on the pronunciation of the word "lists." It really made my eyebrows go up. It sounded so much like somebody who'd had a little too much to drink and was trying WAY too hard not to slur his words.

Oh yes, and I DO love this MOST memorable quote - one for the ages:

"We live in a time set apart." Uh... okaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy...
Man, george, you really took your profundity pills today. Wow. I'm whelmed.

And when he mentioned how important it was for third graders to be able to handle math and reading at a third grade level, I found myself wondering if he's mastered that, himself, yet.

I was proud of the Dems for not rubber-stamping everything. And Ted Kennedy's expressions were WUNNNNNNderful. When they cut to Tom DeLay early-on in the speech, you could see his shifty eyes darting from side to side. Looked like he was taking a head-count of everybody who was dutifully applauding as they should, and who wasn't - so he'd know who to start punishing tomorrow. What a Nazi.

on edit - just a couple of points I forgot before.

85. I was thinking last night
how much this reminded me of Hitler's Neuremburg speeches. The standing-O's looked rehearsed and phony. I wonder if Newt passed the torch to someone who's job now is to give repubs a list of what words to applaud and when to do the Wave, etc.

67. Applause
I seem to remember that no repugnican ever applauded or stood for Clinton. I was appalled at their lack of respect for our Commander in Chief. To our credit, Democrats still have some common decency and sense of grace that the Barbarians lack. I believe this is the kind of actions that Dean referred to when he said, we want our country back. Kerry's actions speak louder than Dean's words. I think he will appeal to the few republicans that truly are gentlemen, ladies, and scholars and are embarrassed by their Commander and thief.

69. my favorite part of the speech

"So tonight I call on team owners, union representatives, coaches, and players to take the lead, to send the right signal, to get tough, and to get rid of steroids now."

It was hilarious when he looked at the camera and boomed in his little big-man voice "get rid of steroids now." The same old tired rhetoric and then he's talking about steroids? WTF?

Cheney really doesn't look well. He seemed barely able to sit up straight. Maybe that's why he's locking himself away in the bunker. He doesn't look capable of handling great amounts of stress.

Fox's filming of the speech was humorous and irritating. When he talked about kids, they would show some senator's preteen kid who must have been invited for that very purpose, and did the same thing with seniors, military, etc. At the end they slowly zoomed in on a sleeping toddler in her dad's arms.

Overall, though, same old bs. Mr bought and paid for trying to front like he's concerned about the people.

79. Another example of his dishonesty
I think, was his demand that the Patriot Act be renewed, compared with his criticism of past administations for arresting terrorists, charging them in court, and convicting them. If he thinks that's the wrong way to deal with terrorists, why does he think we need the Patriot Act?

88. Drunk
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 09:08 PM by Angel_O_Peace
He really did appear and speak as if he were drunk. He made many mistakes in speaking and slurred his words. However, perhaps it was the remote ROVEr speech feed in his ear that kept disrupting his spew of lies and garbage. Perhaps the speaking errors were due to being nervous of stating outright blatant lies and half-truths, and knowing he would be torn apart afterward.

Nawwww....No excuses for the little twerp.
He was drunk.
