China pours troops into Tibet
Source: AFP

BEIJING (AFP) - Thousands of soldiers were seen in Lhasa on Thursday amid reports of a huge military build-up, as the Dalai Lama expressed fears China's crackdown on Tibetan protesters had caused many casualties.

Long military convoys were on the move in Tibet while a build-up of troops also took place in nearby provinces, after a week of violent unrest against China's rule of the region, witnesses, activist groups and media reports said.

"We saw a big convoy of military vehicles with troops in the back," German journalist Georg Blume said, giving a picture of Lhasa, Tibet's capital, on Thursday morning.

"One convoy was about two kilometres (1.2 miles) long and contained about 200 trucks. Each had 30 soldiers on board so that's about 6,000 military

10. China owns our debt, that is why Washington is in STFU mode.
Besides I think the Bush Administration supports Beijing, cracking down on dissent, they are jonesing to do the same here.

22. I don't understand how Communist Cuba is soo evil but China is our bestest buddies..
I'd be willing to say that China has been far more ruthless, authoritative, and repressive to its people than has Cuba. But since China can make widgets really cheaply, we bat an eye. When the Chinese Premier decries the Dalai Llama as a terrorist, why is there no response from the State Dept? Why are we not challenging China on their horrible civil rights record and working conditions. I do not find it to be a coincidence that the beginning of the end of our economy started when we outsourced everything to China... Plus, we've been training their military leaders since the early 90s... Apparently, democracy only matters when you are dealing with them evil Muslims... :sarcasm:

And if you're not cynical enough yet, just read former weapons inspector Scott Ritter's account of the insane double-dealings taking place behind the scenes in neoconland leading up to our invasion of Iraq.

8. Is anyone surprised? China isn't known for its humanitarianism or its understanding
of those who want personal freedoms and their national and cultural freedoms.

I fear for the Tibetan people. China will crush them as with as much senseless violence as it did the democracy movement that started and ended in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

I'm so glad the moron* and his room full of dopes deemed china as being in good standing regarding their human rights. Because, you know, they stand to lose a lot of money of they were naughty. And really isn't that what this is all about?

having been ambassador there. He didn't want to anger the Chinese, so softened the sanctinos.

27. Everybody wants to be the leader of
The New World Order, so no matter what, they'll murder or disappear or suicide everyone who gets in the way, and I'm not talking about our country exclusively, I'm referring to all the other superpowers. They ALL want to lead the New World Order. Dangerous Times ahead. And Kick and Recommend (while I'm rereading what I've written).
