FDA Issues Warning on Cantaloupes
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — People should throw away cantaloupes from a Honduran manufacturer believed to be linked to a salmonella outbreak, the government said Saturday.

The Food and Drug Administration issued the alert for the melons from Agropecuaria Montelibano. Grocers are advised to remove from their stock any cantaloupes from this company. People should check with stores to see if recently purchased cantaloupes came from Honduras.

So far, 50 people have become sickened in 16 states and nine have become ill in Canada after eating the cantaloupes. No deaths have been reported, although 14 people have been hospitalized, the FDA said.

The government also is seeking to detain all cantaloupes shipped to the United States by Agropecuaria Montelibano.

13. cantaloupes from Honduras???
Cantaloupes don't come into season here until late summer. Cantaloupes are one of a number fruits that do not ripen after they are picked; they only start rotting. So Honduran cantaloupes have to be picked green to be shipped to the US market. Don't pay the price for the luxury of eating rotting fruit.

14. Another reason to eat locally grown crops and eat seasonally
No one used to expect to be able to get peaches and cantaloupes in March. Aside from the cost of shipping these crops in money and in energy usage, in South America they often use less than clean water for irrigation as well as whatever food handling is involved. Wait till the summer, then try to buy locally grown produce- you'll support your local farmers who need all the help they can get, you'll help encourage earth friendly shipping and reduce global warming and the fruit will taste better too!
