Ohio close to passing gay marriage ban
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/01/21/marriage.ohio.ap/index.html

After seven years of debate in the Statehouse, lawmakers are close to passing a law that would keep Ohio from recognizing same-sex marriages and keep some state employees from getting benefits for their domestic partners.

A Senate committee planned to vote on the bill Wednesday, and it could go before the full Senate as early as that afternoon. If a version that passed the House last month is not amended, the legislation would go to Gov. Bob Taft, who has indicated he supports it.

The Legislature has struggled with the issue since then-Rep. Jay Hottinger introduced a bill in the House.

1. Goddammit, it's starting.
Two state reps have introduced an amendment in the Illinois General Assembly to the state constitution that would ban gay marriages, civil unions and domestic partnerships in Illinois. Illinois already has its own version of DOMA.

Sorry, Ohio DU'ers. I'm truly sorry.

Terry

3. It doesn't surprise me
I grew up in Ohio and lived ten years in Illinois. To be gay and live in these states is very hard. You have my sympathy and we will fight for you.

4. I'm getting sick of thick headed hipocrits!
You know that people who support this kind of 'legislation' are the same people who want a concealed carry law to pass. They feel it's alright to legislate the lives of others but they should have the right to do whatever they want including carrying around deadly weapons.

I've never been one to write into newspapers but I'm puttin something together now to send to the dispatch for sure.

5. Why do they care so much?
Since they believe that gay people are all promiscuous party animals, why would they want to prevent marriage?

As a marriage-phobic heterosexual, I think it's odd that the Fundies aren't promoting universal marriages.

6. Ohio sucks ...
Just moved here from Portland Oregon (I'm a professor). This state is so backward, so unimaginative, so boring -- it is just amazing. What a dump. This place will never be first in anything progressive.

I don't see how gay marriage hurts the concept of marriage. On the contrary, it would strengthen marriage as an institution.

Another example of republican hypocrisy.

8. There's a Lot of Good About Ohio
you just don't see that right now. That's understandable because, at the moment, all you see is Ohio's extremely right wing. Go out into the woods....see the snake mounds....the natural lakes and streams.... Ohio is great! I love it there and I'm going back there this summer (to visit). There are people there with open minds... don't give up....
