A federal court has given attorneys for former Gov. Don Siegelman and HealthSouth founder Richard Scrushy until May 23 to file briefs in the appeal of their 2006 convictions.

The Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday issued the filing deadline. Prosecutors have 60 days after May 23 to file a response. Defense lawyers have 45 days after that to file a second brief. Siegelman lawyer Vince Kilborn of Mobile said he expects to file the first appeal brief in April. He estimated oral arguments on the case could be heard in late 2008.

Siegelman and Scrushy have been in prison for almost nine months. Siegelman was sentenced to seven years and four months, and Scrushy was sentenced to six years and 10 months.

3. Remember the Duke lacrosse prosecutor? He's nothing when compared to the Alabama "girls"
I wanna see crooked prosecutors in cuffs. I wanna see perp walks. They make me feel better about the "justice" system.

No country club jails for these girls.

Put 'em in the same slammers with the folks they've prosecuted. Now, that'd be justice.

4. If that team of prosecutors gets away with this
then the republicans will have guaranteed themselves power by corrupting and co-opting the mechanisms of the Justice Department. :(

It seems to be open season on democratic politicians, and only democratic politicians. The bias isn't just in the corporate media anymore. Now it's in the highest levels of the legal system too.

7. Is the trial transcript now available?
My understanding is that the appeal was at a standstill because the trial still had not transcribed; the court reporter had died and the judge didn't see to it that someone else transcribe it.
Anyone know what the story is with the transcript?
