Man dies after an attack in subway (Philadelphia)
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

A 36-year-old man died yesterday afternoon within an hour of being beaten by four youths on a SEPTA platform a short distance from City Hall and the Center City Starbucks store where he worked. The attack happened in view of passersby and a transit policeman who was unable to help.

Police said last night they had charged one of the teenagers, a 16-year-old student at Simon Gratz High School, with murder and conspiracy in the beating death of Sean Patrick Conroy, who lived in South Philadelphia and managed the Starbucks at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, 12th and Market Streets.

The three other youths involved in the attack were being sought last night.

The four went after Conroy at 2:35 p.m., authorities said. He had just gotten off work and was on the platform of the westbound Market-Frankford El below 13th and Market Streets. A steady stream of commuters was coming and going.

SEPTA Police Capt. Steven Harold said a sergeant who routinely patrols the 13th Street concourse was on the eastbound side when he saw the victim in some sort of dispute with four juveniles.

"He was in a defensive posture," Harold said of Conroy. "Apparently, these males were doing something he wasn't prepared for. This was not a friendly conversation."

The sergeant saw one of the youths take a swing at Conroy, Harold said. The sergeant rushed to the other side of the platform, but by the time he arrived, the youths had fled.

Other people were on the platform, Harold said, but left when the sergeant approached.

Conroy went "into some type of difficult breathing, chest pains, palpitations," Harold said. "He was in obvious distress."

This is fucking sick. A beating in Septa's safest possible station (under Septa HQ and around the corner from Transit Police HQ). The local blogs are saying that the kids were trying to steal the guy's I-Pod... there's been a lot of I-Pod related robberies by students on the subway in Phila lately. They keep mentioning the school the kids attend but this happened at a time that school is in session so obviously they are a part of the truancy problem that plagues our city. I work at one of the schools in this city and I'll tell you these kids will be lauded as heroes today by some of my students... last year, when two kids paralyzed a teacher at another school, the kids never stopped talking about how great it was.

Because people from Green Bay are murderers. According to the media anyway.

But they would still have to murder 5 more victims before they could become DEER HUNTER MATERIAL.

Deer hunters are trained killers. No suprise they would start hunting humans.

:sarcasm:

28. Without troops sometimes there is nothing but chaos and
Dictatorship too... seems it is the people making decisions on how to use the troops that are the problem ... you know the meme... Troops don't kill people, Presidents do.

3. More and more humans are becoming animals.
I don't know why it's happening, and I don't see any way to stop it. We are turning on each other like overcrowded rats. Many of our kids are growing up to be violent criminals. How long can this go on before our society is in genuine jeopardy?

35. It's happening because the breakdown and lawlessness
is sitting in the WH. They have shown they do not need to follow the rules.

Money that would be used for more police and community projects have been slashed to almost nothing.

No jobs for the youth, they are not going to work for 6 bucks an hr. Families falling apart. Military service not a viable option because they know they will go to war.

Infrastructure of cities falling apart.

This is only going to get worse, it will take a while to fix it.

7. This story MAY BE incorrect
http://www.kyw1060.com/Man-Dies-After-Subway-Ruckus--Teens-Sought/1893180

The police indicated per the above that there was no sign of physical injury to the victim. It was noted that he may have had a heart condition and collapsed from a heart attack.

This does not excuse the teens, but there are obviously conflicts to the story as new info has surfaced. BTW I live in Philly and it's been on the news this morning.

That is the most whacko thing I've heard in a awhile. It's "better" that the 4 murderers survive than the actual victim?????

:wow: :wow: :wow:

I'm not much of a fan of concealed carry (mostly because of lax firearms background checks), but that "1 adult man" had every right to use as much lethal force as necessary to save his own life. If it was 4 thousand criminals who were trying to kill him, it would be justified to use lethal force against each and every one of them, if that's what it took to remain alive.

There have been a series of beatings on the Broad St. Subway in recent months. Many involved gangs from disciplinary charter schools attacking other high school students on their way home.

16. Update: Targeted for no reason, beaten.
http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_update/20080328__Targeted_for_no_reason_.html

SEAN PATRICK Conroy had just visited his fiancee, whom he'd asked to marry just a few days before, on Easter.
He was headed to the Starbucks at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, at 12th and Market streets, and to the job he loved.

He wanted to make sure that everything was OK at the shop, which he managed.

"He loved living in the city; he was never afraid," Sharon Conroy said yesterday about her only child, who lived on 10th Street near Snyder Avenue in South Philadelphia, and always took the subway to work.

Conroy's love affair with Philadelphia ended about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday when five teens crept up behind him in an underground SEPTA concourse near 13th and Market streets.

Police said the teens apparently targeted Conroy, 36, at random. They just wanted to hurt someone. They punched him in the back of the head. Conroy fell to the ground, gasping for air.

The kids beat him while he was down, leaving large bruises on his body, a police source said.

A SEPTA police officer who witnessed the attack rushed to Conroy's side and attempted to resuscitate him.

But the pummeling, or blunt force trauma, triggered an asthma attack, and Conroy lost consciousness, according to the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office.

Shortly after 3 p.m., he was pronounced dead at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

The Medical Examiner's Office labeled the death a homicide.

FUCK! So they beat him up just for fun, kicked him while he was down. I hope they find the other teens despite the "No Snitching" bullshit that some DUers think is a good thing.

39. I doubt anyone thinks "No Snitching" is a good thing.
But when doing the right thing and going to the cops means you and/or members of your family risk getting beaten up or killed, very few people are going to do their civic duty.

Frankly, I can't say I blame 'em. If it's just your own ass on the line, that's your own choice, but if it puts your family at risk...

Of course, a lot of this shit could be solved with some social reforms, like establishing a living wage and clearing gang influence out of the prison system...
