Libya proposes settlement for terrorist victim claims: US

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Libya is now proposing a "comprehensive settlement" for claims of compensation from families of US victims of terrorist attacks, which the US government is studying, an official said Thursday.

David Welch, assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, was in London on Tuesday and Wednesday to explore the idea with Libyan officials, US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

Libya, which has hired lawyers to defend itself in the US judicial system, "has promised to respond to the American court cases brought against it in good faith, and we expect that Libya will honor this commitment," he said.

"Recently, however, Libya has raised concerns of its own and suggested a way to expedite resolution of these cases through a comprehensive settlement agreement," McCormack said
