Clinton tells Democrats: Don't vote for McCain
Source: CNN

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina (CNN) – Hillary Clinton pleaded for partisan unity on Thursday, urging Democrats not to abandon their party to vote for John McCain if their preferred candidate fails to secure the nomination.

Clinton was asked by a questioner in the audience here what she would tell frustrated Democrats who might consider voting for McCain in the general election out of spite.

“Please think through this decision,” Clinton said, laughing and emphasizing the word “please.”

“It is not a wise decision for yourself or your country.”

Speaking as a former Clintonite who switched to Obama when I thought her campaign tactics were getting too aggressively harsh, I have never agreed with the speculation that, if she can't win the nomination, she actually wants Obama to lose to McCain so she can run again in 2012.

Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 07:53 PM by calimary
I swear - the idiocy and milquetoast crap out of our party when it comes to fighting the OTHER guys - just simply blows my mind. I would be buying EVERY billboard I could afford, in EVERY city I could afford it in, from now til the day before the election to plaster this picture all over the place from coast-to-coast. Along with the date - while New Orleans was drowning.

This is being handed to us on a silver plate. And our folks are just rolling over and going back to sleep. OR fighting amongst each other.

Just makes me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:grr:  :banghead:

18. Welcome to DU! We are not the people of amoebas. Maybe most of our reps are,
but WE are not. You'll find plenty of backbone here. Maybe that's why they can't relate to us and why they don't seem to hear us. They can't even speak out language.

27. Argh
Dem pols in general just don't have spines, it seems to be genetic? I was happy last night to hear Obama refer to McBush's 3rd term, thought that was clever and to the point.

3. Hillary is a Classy Lady...
Unfortunately Obama and his supporters have no class. As a result, I will stay home on election day if he is the nominee. I encourage all Hillary supporters to do the same.

7. That kind of thinking has kept the Bush Genocide Gang in power for almost a decade.
.
.
.

A republican win will not surprise me as I see this attitude expressed on one of the more liberal boards consistently

You are not alone - I see many here that will defeat the democratic movement,

Most are not by intent, but ignorance and emotion.

"ignorance and emotion" got you Bush 1 and 2

time for a change in tactics.

Stay home then,

but don't whine about the results.

9. but why?
I admit I was tempted to withhold my consent and not vote, but really, that won't help anything either. you may not like Obama but how could you possibly be so opposed to him that you would ignore the opinion of more than half your fellow party members? What do you see that makes you think he is so completely unfit to serve? unity is the only path to something like victory.

I'll go with whatever, don't love either of them, but voting AGAINST the admiral's son is my priority.

11. Yup, stay home and then watch McCain become president. Utter stupidity.
Guess what? I will vote for Hillary is she is our nominee and I support Obama and voted for him already in the CT primary. But I am not going to let a Republican have my vote nor will I let them take away a vote from the Democrats. Hillary and Obama have more class than all the Rethugs combined simply because they chose to Democrats. If you stay home you are no longer a Dem in my eyes-you are a nobody.

28. So, all war all the time
is OK with you? Children not having insurance coverage is OK? Making the Bushco tax cuts for the rich permanent is OK? That's what you'll get if you don't vote for the Democrat - regardless of who she/he is. Even if you don't care for all the arrogance of Obama and supporters, PLEASE hold your nose and vote for him anyway if he's "your" party's rep.

34. you would encourage....
your fellow man to embrace the destiny of another 4 years of the republican regime, 100 years in Iraq, more forecloseures, less medical care (the list goes on and on) -cutting off your nose to spite your face? What kind of person are you?

Personally, I think the Hildabeast is little more than a closet republican, that being said, I will vote the party line if she manages to get the nomination.

8. When the time comes, I would like to see Hillary give a concession
speech like Gore did in 2000. That went a long ways in my book as to what kind of man Gore really was: a President. If Hillary were to do that, she could mend fences quite quickly and I for one, would think better of her.

As an Obama supporter, if her were to lose, I would want him to do the same to mend fences with Hillary supporters and unite the Democrats to fight McCain.

26. "Experience" can be something quite difference in our minds . . .
the experience which leads to lies is to be avoided ---
the experience which leads anyone to think that we should "bomb Iran" would be out for me.
Also --- "hundred year wars" and "generation wars."

The experience which says that this is another phony war and should have been avoided --- ?
I'm for it!!!

30. Maybe treason overstates it a bit...
But there is no question that a vote for McCain, regardless of whether you support Clinton or Obama, is self-destructive to the point of insanity for anyone who has an annual income of fewer than seven figures.

If you vote for McCain, the economic destruction of our country that will continue will result in four years wherein 98% of us (Americans, regardless of political views or party affiliations; this is about MONEY, people) will wish we were dead.

So, if you're thinking about voting for McCain, why not do yourself and your country a favor? Go out and buy one of those easy-to-obtain shotguns at Walmart, load it, put the barrel in your mouth and pull the trigger.

33. I do
I think if she cannot win the nomination, she wants Obama to lose to McCain to better her chantes in 2012. As a New Yorker, just think what she did to Nita Lowey.

If I had had the choice between Hillary and Nita, I would have chosen Nita.

No, I won't vote for McCain. I will stay home, which I haven't in 30 years of voting.
