Iraqi PM extends deadline of surrender to April 8, al-Sadr fights on

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki Friday extended the deadline to April 8 for Shia militiamen to hand over weapons or face severe penalties.

In a statement he said that all those who would deliver heavy and intermediate weapons to security forces within these timeframe would be rewarded financially. Al-Maliki has already vowed to go all out in fight against the Shia militia.

According to the latest report, Prime Minister al-Maliki has decided to announce a truce for five days in order to allow people get supplies of food, water and other essential commodities. The National Iraqi News Agency reported that the measure has been taken in view of deteriorating humanitarian situations in Basra.


Iraq's Parliament at present is holding an emergency session to try to end the war between the Shia militias and the Iraqi security forces. Over 130 people have already been killed so far and a curfew has been clamped in Baghdad...

At some point, Al Sadr may respond with a surrender deadline of his own. Then it will be time for the helicopters on the roof of the American embassy.

3. I don't think Al-Maliki understands the concept of a deadline.
So now it's April 8th, or what exactly? He'll continue to order his troops to do the same thing they are doing from now through April 8th? Or will he call in the U.S. troops, or Coalition troops for Fallujah II?
He never actually indicated any consequences, did he?

That's it al-Maliki: way to slap al-Sadr's hands.

One question, though: does surrendering their weapons include surrendering all of the equipment that they're taking from the government forces during the fighting? ;-)
