(Director of National Intelligence) McConnell's top worry: Iran getting nukes

Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell urged a Furman University audience today to consider a life of public service, providing an overview of his path from a Greenville childhood and defending the U.S. Senate version of controversial surveillance legislation pending in Congress.

In an hour-long speech, the Furman University graduate said the legislation should allow officials to tap foreign communication, require a warrant when eavsdropping on U.S. citizens, no matter where they are in the world, and should provide legal immunity to telecommunications companies that have cooperated with government surveillance.

The U.S. House version of the bill would cause "severe operational impact on my community," McConnell said, noting debate about the bill resumes Monday.

"My biggest worry at the moment: nuclear weapons in Iran," McConnell said. He said if Iran acquired such a weapon it would transform the entire Middle East.
