Election machines voted out: 78 Iowa counties must adjust systems - again

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Some southwest Iowa county auditors have a message for state legislators: Make up your minds.

Just a few years after the state used $18 million in federal funds to buy new voting machines, the Legislature has deemed one voting system unacceptable.


Glenwood, in Iowa's Mills County, has 12 touch-screen voting machines it will have to replace with an optical scanning system that can produce a paper trail of votes.


snip: The change will cost $8.5 million, but it is well worth the cost to get the entire state on the same system, Secretary of State Michael Mauro said.

More than that, it will create a record to fall back on if the voting machines are incorrectly programmed or if they malfunction. With touch screen machines, no paper ballot is generated.

...we the people are getting it. It's taken awhile, but it's happening. The tide may have turned.
