WPXI.comEight people were killed and two are missing after a fire swept through a home in Jefferson County Thursday morning, state police said.
The fire broke out along Pershing Avenue around 2:30 a.m., completely destroying the front of the home and charring at least two cars parked outside.
Witnesses and neighbors said one young girl jumped out a second-floor window and knocked on doors for help. Another boy reportedly escaped the flames as well.
School officials told Channel 11's Jodine Costanzo the boy who escaped the flames was a sixth-grader; and the girl that jumped from the window had already graduated from school. Both were taken to DuBois Hospital. Their names and conditions are not known.
School officials added that all of the students at Brockway High School were taken to the auditorium and are speaking with counselors.
State police Trooper Mark Schrecengost said, "The fire crews arrived within minutes and ... the house was engulfed and there were confirmed entrapments."
The fire, which took place in Brockway about two hours northeast of Pittsburgh, was brought under control around 8 a.m., but was still flaring up Schrecengost said.
Two fire marshals were investigating and no cause had been determined. However, state police said it appeared the blaze was not suspicious.
State police will hold a news conference on the fatal fire at 2 p.m.
