McCain: Success in Iraq 'within reach'
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain said success in Iraq was "within reach," as a Senate panel held a high-profile hearing on the war Tuesday that will involve all three presidential candidates.

Army Gen. David Petraeus was expected to face several tough questions about Iraq on Tuesday.

"Our goal -- my goal -- is an Iraq that no longer needs American troops, and I believe we can achieve that goal, perhaps sooner than many imagine," the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said. "But I also believe that the promise of withdrawal of our forces regardless of the consequences would constitute a failure of political and moral leadership."

"Success, the establishment of peaceful, democratic state, the defeat of terrorism -- this success is within reach," he said. "Congress must not choose to lose in Iraq. We must choose to succeed."

2. Only if we have
very long arms and can hold them up for a very long time.

Remember Nixon's "...Light at the end of the tunnel" analogy about Vietnam? "Success within reach" is the same meme. Sounds good but it's not happening.

5. depends on how success is defined.
success meaning that we have stolen everything that we can steal and turned them into our slaves then we have been successful at that. I cant see any other way that it could be in any way a success though.

8. Righto. He doesn't say how "success" is defined does he?
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 11:21 AM by Virginia Dare

Oh wait, yes he does, a peaceful Democratic state of Iraq, where American presence is not needed. But wait, didn't he say it could take 100 years or longer?...:eyes:

13. mccain's words
To be fair McCain would have a better idea of where the war is heading than a lot of people - but I wonder if he's telling the truth. Apparently the surge has helped a bit - but I don't know if it can be won soon. Unless his time frame for "within reach" is different than most Americans.

20. To be fair-I think the following Senators were better judges on the war
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 08:06 PM by bronxiteforever
The following senators voted against the resolution in 2003. McCain's judgment is very suspect in my opinion.

* 21 (42%) of 50 Democratic Senators voted against the resolution: Sens. Akaka (D-HI), Bingaman (D-NM), Boxer (D-CA), Byrd (D-WV), Conrad (D-ND), Corzine (D-NJ), Dayton (D-MN), Durbin (D-IL), Feingold (D-WI), Graham (D-FL), Inouye (D-HI), Kennedy (D-MA), Leahy (D-VT), Levin (D-MI), Mikulski (D-MD), Murray (D-WA), Reed (D-RI), Sarbanes (D-MD), Stabenow (D-MI), Wellstone (D-MN), Wyden (D-OR).
* 1 of 49 Republican Senators voted against the resolution: Sen. Chafee (R-RI).
* The only Independent Senator voted against the resoution: Sen. Jeffords (I-VT)

welcome to du!

18. The guy has no choice but to utter such asinine statements:
If he doesn't, he loses a chunk of his support. Which means that he has no choice, as republican candidate, than to align himself with the idiot's rhetoric. Truth is, everyone knows full well that this mess is beyond salvation and that we will move out. But for electoral purposes, this cannot be said by those who count on republican or half-ass republican support.
