FBI probe: Lieberman campaign to blame for crashing own Web site

A federal investigation has concluded that U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman's 2006 re-election campaign was to blame for the crash of its Web site the day before Connecticut's heated Aug. 8 Democratic primary.

The FBI office in New Haven found no evidence supporting the Lieberman campaign's allegations that supporters of primary challenger Ned Lamont of Greenwich were to blame for the Web site crash.

Lieberman, who was fighting for his political life against the anti-Iraq war candidate Lamont, implied that joe2006.com was hacked by Lamont supporters.

"The server that hosted the joe2006.com Web site failed because it was overutilized and misconfigured. There was no evidence of (an) attack," according to the e-mail.

A program that could have detected a legitimate attack was improperly configured, the e-mail states.

1. Can't tell whether it happened due to incompetence or intention.
But it does remind me of when Rove bugged his own office, and then called authorities to accuse of a third party (opposition) of planting the bugs.

Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 01:12 PM by Pawel K
and in fact joe2006.com was hosted on a shared apache server from what I remember at the time. ;-)

The simple fact is that if you are stupid enough to host your multi-million dollar campaign on a shared web hosting plan the box will crash no matter what server combination you happen to be using.

Apache on the other hand (got its name from the number of patches needed to make it run properly) is OK on a box you control, but using a shared Apache hosting service for a nationally covered political campaign? Fucking idiots.

a bunch of fucking idiots, how in the world did they win that election?

And how in the world did the FBI get involved? Your average joe with some basic knowledge of how a web server works could have told you what happened.

22. Feds Blame Lieberman for Web Site Crash
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Sen. Joe Lieberman's re-election campaign caused its own Web site to crash on the eve of the August 2006 Connecticut primary, federal investigators have found — not supporters of Democratic challenger Ned Lamont, whom Lieberman implied were responsible.

"In short, the server that hosted the joe2006.com Web site failed because it was overutilized and misconfigured," according to an Oct. 25, 2006, e-mail included in FBI documents obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press. "There was no evidence of (an) attack."

"Senator Lieberman's campaign team accused an awful lot of good people of breaking the law on the eve of the primary, and they did it for political purposes," Lamont told the AP in a telephone interview. "If he does the right thing, he'll stand up and say, 'I was wrong."

Lieberman had implied that Lamont supporters had hacked the site, saying on primary day: "I'm concerned that our Web site is knocked out on the day of the primary, you'd assume it wasn't any casual observer."

His campaign asked the Justice Department to investigate; Lamont's campaign denied involvement.

I recall the campaign manager attacking us Lamont supporters with such venom because we purposely brought down the website on the day of the primary which could have cost LIARman some votes.

28. You mean when PIGGIES fly?
Third, Chalabi had political impact that was virtually unheard of for a foreigner. He used his personal magnetism, lobbying skills and tactical abilities to merge U.S. policy with his own ambitions. The U.S. Congress passed a law written largely to achieve his vision and to boost the fortunes of his political vehicle, the Iraqi National Congress. He had a battery of supporters on Capitol Hill. U.S. senators like Trent Lott, *John McCain,* Sam Brownback,
*Joe Lieberman,*
and Bob Kerrey became his champions. But even more important, he knew how to manipulate the key aides who work anonymously in the back rooms to make Capitol Hill run. He courted key Republicans like Trent Lott’s Randy Scheunemann and House international affairs staffer Steve Rademaker, as well as Senate Democratic aides like Chris Straub and Peter Galbraith.

27. No one wanted to hear the truth of this.
Here is what I mailed to Atrios today. This is essentially what happened. I also tried to get both press and Lamont people to listen to this explanation. Nothing came of it. Oh well. I tried.

-----------------------------

There was more to that story than even the FBI has admitted or was apprised of:

The site that Lieberman was using was based upon Joomla!, a very nice CMS. It was using a component called "Community Builder", a social networking framework. Seems that, from what I have been able to glean, that there was a problem in the interaction between Joomla's user handling and Community Builder's user handling and handling of the login. Not long after the Lieberman server problems, both Joomla and CB went to security development Defcon 5, especially CB, which really freaked out. They both released security upgrades within 24 hours of this. When I tell you that those people were freaking, trust me, it was snot, spit and sweat everywhere. Someone in the Lieberman IT orbit had to have told the Joomla and CB people what the real source of the problems were. And if the Lieberman IT people were giving Joomla and CB Defcon 5 heads-ups, then surely Dan Gerstein was aware as well.

I suspect that the server traffic problems were due to either a brute-force attack or a buffer overflow attack against the site, that lead to the hack. Thing is that there were rumblings of these problems that had existed for a while before this incident, problems that had lead to similar site hacks.

I tried to get people to look at the Joomla/CB side of things in this, but I am afraid that it all fell on deaf ears.

-----------------------------

It's just a damed shame Tim Tagaris had to go through this crap.

29. this, in a nutshell, what SUCKS about negative politics
the false attacks are heard far and wide when it matters most; the exoneration is in the back pages months or years later.

now lieberman, from the comfort of his senate seat, gets to decide if he deigns to bestow an apology on lamont.

negative crap like this doesn't always work, but it works often enough to be a very common campaign tool. it doesn't matter that the truth eventually outs. what matters is how much truth outs by election day.

Nothing stops a political career faster than the implication of sexual indescretions...doesn't matter if they are true or not. This is WAR and it's high time we got dirty and took down the criminals who have raped this democracy.
