Canada says will not call for boycott of Games
Source: YN

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada will not call for a boycott of the Beijing Olympic Games over China's treatment of Tibet because it would only harm Canadian athletes, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Tuesday.

1. But "harming athletes" is just an nice humane excuse

It's all about the Canadian interests.

2. Personally, I could care less
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 10:22 AM by Pawel K
boycotting the olympics is like spraying perfurme on a pile of shit. We feel like we are doing something when in reality we aren't doing shit.

If we wanted to make a difference we would stop buying cheap chinese shit, something none of us seem willing to do.

3. Harper's right-wing government won't take a stand against human rights abuses.
Why am I not surprised?

O, Canada, you have fallen so far from grace.

4. Actually, it's got less to do with politics
and everything to do with self-interest. Canada is hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, and would prefer that the Olympics be one big love-fest.

5. That makes sense, although I still doubt Harper & Co. are particularly concerned
about human rights violations, especially in far away Tibet.

Thanks for the reminder about 2010.

I miss the Canada of old.

7. You are right, the Harper cabal cares little about human rights...
at home and internationally. They are a blight on the Canadian landscape and need to be turfed asap, imo. I miss the Canada of old too and I live there.

6. Name one country that's pulling out altogether
All you have are a few where the leaders are saying they won't attend the opening ceremonies.

Big fricking deal. If the leaders skips out but the athletes still march in the ceremony you haven't achieved anything notable.

9. You serious? You support this shit?
Here's some slave workers from China. I'm sure they'd love to know you would rather the world come and play in their country, and pretend their suffering doesn't exist, instead of telling the Chinese ruling class to go fuck itself. Frankly, I'm hoping the Olympics here in Vancouver are a flop too. The olympics are nothing more than a corporate cash grab. Like I give a shit if a handful of people get to feel all warm and gooey about running real fast.
