3. And that's 100 years "after" our soldiers stop getting killed. . .

To get a feel for what McCain was saying, about the best account I've seen is Rick Hertzberg's in The New Yorker. He was there at the townhall meeting and wrote up his account shortly thereafter.

Read the whole thing; but here's Rick's conclusion and response to those who even then were already saying McCain was being taken out of context ...

You have to hand it to McCain. It's impossible to imagine any of the other Republicans engaging in this kind of extended conversation with a citizen. There was more real debate in this exchange than in any of the so-called real debates.

But what the context shows, I think, is that yanking that sound bite out of context isn’t really all that unfair. McCain's wants to stay in Iraq until no more Americans are getting killed, no matter how long it takes and how many Americans get killed achieving that goal—that is, the goal of not getting any more Americans killed. And once that goal is achieved, we'll stay.

4. But there's light at the end of the tunnel
Seems almost like yesterday when the asshole politicians and military men were spouting that line about Vietnam.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Who could've imagined a more fucked up situation?

10. WTF "Multi-National Division "?
Keep playing Charades over there with the bullshit names. Get our troops the fuck out of Iraq. We had no business invading them to begin with, the Iraqis sure don't want us there, we have no business staying. Every life lost there is just wasted. The term worked for 'nam and it works for iraq. Wasted. What crap.

17. my point was that MSM is not putting 17 in the story titles-which it should be doing
they are burying that sometimes two, three, four, five or six paragraphs into the story

I am glad OP added the info to their thread title

20. Oh well of course not.
My guess is that if you asked a random mouse-potato how many soldiers of ours were killed in Iraq this week they would not know and would guess something like one or two. The media has done its job well (again.)

16. 18 US soldiers killed this week as clashes continue in Sadr city and 1 non combat/19
~snip~

They added an earlier air raid, around midnight, killed four and wounded six near Al-Albaith mosque in the centre of Sadr City, stronghold of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr whose Mahdi Army militiamen are fighting Iraqi and US forces. Among those killed were two brothers, both adults, according to the security officials, cited by the AFP.

A U.S. military statement Thursday said 13 militants were killed in four separate clashes during the night. It also announced the death of another U.S. soldier Wednesday in a roadside bombing in central Baghdad, raising to 18 the number of American troop deaths in Iraq since Sunday.

18. Yes they are avoiding totaling up the numbers, aren't they...
...it doesn't fit with the narrative of how much "better" things are in Iraq.

So much better, that an officer was killed in the Green Zone while exercising.

So much better, that Maliki is free to start fights that get American troops killed, so that he can weaken his political opposition.

So much better, ... right.

But what really, really chaps my hide, is that now TPM is joining the propaganda brigade by looking kindly on this interview of John Burns and Dexter Filkins, who go on about how much better it is there. No, really. Why (among other things), they even cited the fact that John McCain was able to walk about in an open-air market... Yes they really did. About that time I gave up listening. See it here:
