McCain-Rice team would lead among New Yorkers, poll says
Source: Reuters

NEW YORK - More New York voters would support a Republican ticket of John McCain and Condoleezza Rice than a Democratic ticket of Barack Obama with Hillary Clinton as the vice presidential candidate, a survey said on Wednesday.

The match-up of McCain, the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee, and Rice, the U.S. Secretary of State, earned the support of 49 percent of registered New York voters surveyed in a WNBC/Marist Poll.

I bet not, not NY for four more Bush years.

I bet this has something to do with the recent takeover of Reuters,
and Funded Fascism plying propaganda.

The Nixon era and the likes of Donald Segretti taught us how
"polls" can be rigged.

23. Most national polls have skewed numbers at this point
Mostly from people who support Obama/Clinton claiming that they would support the person running against their candidate, knowing that it will affect national polling data and possibly make their candidate look better by comparison. McCain got a sizable boost in the polls once we locked up the nomination, i don't see why it would be different for our side.

24. Do people actually believe that McCain has the widespread appeal that "polls" suggest?
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 02:08 AM by Dover
Of course he doesn't, but people seem to let polls think and shape reality for them, as though polling has remained some untouched bastion of uncompromising truth amidst all the evidence for blatant propaganda in other media sources. Does anyone think the power of polls as a tool to persuade and manipulate perceptions were somehow overlooked by those in power? Though exit polls have yet to be completely eliminated, they have managed to undermine their results as well.
What polls like this tell me is that they are, once again, trying to create the appearance of a 'tight race'. Easier to manipulate the outcome.

I guess two stolen elections still hasn't changed the love of the game for folks, regardless of
whether or not it's 'real'. Has anything changed since the last two 'selections'?

9. no way
This is nonsense. Its probably because we don't have a nominee first off. Next Clinton is our Senator and there are probably people who are angry she won't be getting the nomination. I think you come back and re-poll a month after we have our nominee and we will be ahead by at least 10 points.

All these polls before we even have a nominee are beyond stupid. We need to sort things out first and then we shall start to see polls that are meaningful.

McCain doesn't not seem as scary as people on the board want to believe. He comes across as sane, saner than Bush. He has the media behind him, and add a black woman to the mix, maybe unbeatable.

I have said all along that Obama or Clinton should have gone for VP, because it would have been more acceptable. But, you guys wanted your "historic" race, well, you got it. After the worst disaster of a President ever, we are more than likely to get another repub as President.

I used to shake my head in disbelief wondering how W got even a single vote in either of the two elections. Now, the fact that anyone, ANYONE, would look at McCain and see a viable candidate, is beyond my scope of thinking. I just dont get it.

we've got a lot of them upstate and even though a lot went Dem last time around they're a fickle lot and for obvious reasons they're not likely to vote for a woman or a man of color. However, those intrepid pollers must have had a lot of moxy to get to them to poll them; having been threatened at gunpoint while accidentally tresspassing on a trailride, I know they don't take kindly to strangers, even if it's cute girls on horses!

18. If there is a problem, it's not with Reuters

The poll itself has nothing to do with Reuters, but is a WNBC/Marist College poll, which means it is probably run by the two professors credited at the Marist Poll website and funded by WNBC (just a guess there, not interested enough to check on that). The point is that it's not Reuters who's responsible for the poll.

The pollsters' press release is at http://www.maristpoll.marist.edu/nyspolls/GV080409.htm

A very, very strange poll to run. There are no obvious reasons why they picked these tickets to poll on. They polled 574 respondents, which means that this poll should be within 4%, 95% of the time. This could well be one of those cases wherein the actual result is outside the margin of error. More than likely, however, is that these tickets are non-starters to begin with. McCain is not going to shore up his shabby relationship with the evangelical base of the Republican party by picking a former Democrat, and he's also not helped by picking someone who's never held elected office, and also she's a foreign policy expert, which is supposed to be "his" area (as laughable as that is) and so brings nothing to the table there. And Obama-Clinton? That won't happen for about a million reasons.

They did poll on how McCain-Lieberman would do against Obama-Clinton, and Clinton-Obama, and McCain loses both of those matchups. It is strange Reuters said nothing at all about that result.

I also think it's simply a reflection of how bitter this contest is, as the Marist Pollsters opined in their press release. There seems to be a 6% dropoff in the percentage of registered Democrats in NY who go for McCain if the nominee is Obama rather than Clinton. I think that, consistent with the more bitter contested primaries in the past, even these folks will not push the lever for McCain in November when push comes to shove. (also, even though the numbers happen to be the same, this particular bit of the results would be highly unreliable, as the margin of error for these within-sample groups of respondents would be pretty darn big--about 6%, assuming half the respondents were Democrats).

When the choice is simply McCain v Clinton or McCain v. Obama, the result is, as the Clinton campaign likes to say, a statistical tie (though this is, of course, technically incorrect when referring to actual polls of the population at the polls rather than samples of the population by pollsters).

It's a minor point, but I also don't like the way the Marist Poll reports some of their poll results here. They reify their results by reporting them as if they were measuring the population itself, not a sample. A strange mistake to make, since they seem to do a fine job otherwise. Anyone who has their own CATI lab should know better--maybe the results were written up for the press by a grad student?

For what it's worth, I really, very sincerely doubt that this poll was rigged in any way. A real poll, as done by actual political scientists, tries to measure the population accurately, not to introduce inaccuracies that support their own presuppositions. This would appear to me to be a real poll.

An August 2006 poll by Zogby of New Yorkers found that 40% of the state and 50% of New York City
thought that White House higher ups knew in advance of 911 and did nothing. August 2006. So
NYC with about 40% of the states population and the rest of the state just forgot this opinion

you can't even recognize him.

40. Great find!
I wonder what an even more thorough investigation of his activities would uncover, re: polls.

Segretti was a lawyer who served as a prosecutor for the military and later as a civilian. However, his license was suspended for two years following his conviction. In 1995, he ran for a local judgeship in Orange County, California. However, he quickly withdrew from the race when his campaign awakened lingering anger over his involvement in the Watergate scandal. In 2000, Segretti served as co-chair of John McCain's presidential campaign in Orange County, California.
