China 'Uncovers Olympic Terror Plot'
Source: Time

(BEIJING, China) — China says it has uncovered a criminal ring planning to kidnap athletes and others at the Beijing Olympic Games.Thirty-five members of a ring based in the restive western Xinjiang region were arrested, Ministry of Public Security Spokesman Wu Heping told a news conference.
"We face a real terrorist threat," Wu said. The arrests took place between March 26 and April 6, he said.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror hijackings, China has tried to portray the simmering separatist rebellion in Xinjiang as being fueled by terrorist organizations in Central Asia and the Middle East. But evidence made public has been scarce.
Western embassies asked Beijing for more information after authorities said they broke up an attempt to hijack a plane in western China last month but so far no evidence has been provided, diplomats have said.

On Thursday, Wu said the ring was plotting to kidnap athletes, foreign journalists and other visitors to the August Games. He added that police had also confiscated almost 22 pounds of explosives and eight sticks of dynamite and "jihadist" literature in the latest raids in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang.

19. Xinjiang is not Tibet. It's the province north of Tibet, though the situations are similar.
The Muslim residents of Xinjiang are just as oppressed as the Tibetans though. The difference is that the Uyghurs tend to fight back a little more.

18. Sorry folks, no bullshit here.
Well, probably not anyway. Xinjiang is the home of the Uyghurs, which was an independent Muslim kingdom until the 1700's when China invaded. The Uyghurs rebelled and drove the Chinese out in the mid-1800's, but China re-invaded in the 1870's. There was another rebellion in the 1930's that lead to about a years worth of independence. There have been nonstop assasinations, bombings, and insurgencies ever since, and the Uyghur consider themselves to be the occupied nation of East Turkestan. Much like the Native Americans, they have few qualms about killing Han civilians, who they consider to be occupying colonist invaders.

It's no suprise that they'd plan attacks during the Olympics. They've been trying to gain international sympathy for their plight for decades, but unlike the Palestinians and the Tibetans, have been mostly ignored by international activists. Raiding the Olympics worked quite well for the Palestinians!
