Source: Associated Press via Yahoo News

RALEIGH, N.C. - The FBI says it has taken a North Carolina-based Marine wanted in the brutal murder of a pregnant colleague into custody in Mexico. The FBI office in Charlotte said Thursday night that special agents and Mexican authorities have arrested Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean.

Laurean is charged with murder in the slaying of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.

The FBI says Laurean is awaiting extradition back to the U.S.

10. I seriously doubt that.
I hope this story does call attention to what women in the military face, though, and maybe some change can come from that.

6. Given that Mexico forbids the Death penalty, Will both the State and Feds give up the death penalty?
Remember, Mexico will NOT extradite someone subject ot the Death Penalty, unless the state (and given the nature of this crime, both the State of Federal Government) give up the Death penalty in this case (Unless the suspect agrees to extradition without that requirement). Lets see what North Carolina and the Federal Government agree to, to get this guy back to the States for Trial.

Remember this was a Marine who killed another Marine on a US Marine base. Thus this is subject to a Federal murder Charge (On a Federal "Reservation") and a state charge (Done in the State of North Carolina). Thus both the Federal Government AND the State of North Carolina MUST agree NOT to go for the Death Penalty in this case BEFORE Mexico will agree to any extradition (Unless he is stupid enough to agree to extradition, which I doubt).

7. Man wanted in Marine Lance Corporal's murder arrested in Mexico
Source: Dayton Daily News

Fugitive Marine Corps murder suspect Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean has been captured in Mexico, the FBI announced late Thursday, April 10.

Laurean, suspected in the murder of 20-year-old Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach of Vandalia, has been sought by authorities since he fled his home during the early morning hours of Jan. 11.

FBI agents are awaiting extradition to bring Laurean back to Onslow County, N.C., to face murder charges, according to the announcement from the Charlotte officer of the FBI.

CNN reported that Dewey Hudson, district attorney for Onslow County, said if Laurean chooses to fight extradition, it could take two years to return him to North Carolina.

Just an update to a very sad story. This week Ohio 3rd District Rep. Mike Turner met with the Marine Corps officials to determine why they were so slow in investigating Lance Cpl. Lauterbach's allegations, as well as the Corps' overall poor handling of this case.

9. He won't ger the death penalty.
Mexico will not extradite if the possible sentence is death.

I hope that now the Lance Cpl. Lauterbach's family will finally begin to find some closure. They have been through literal hell.

11. Murder is local news. This story is being flogged by the M$M for its entertainment value only.
We're a long way, I fear, from a balanced and useful press.

12. What is entertaining about a 20-year-old pregnant woman...
...in the military, who was raped, reported it to her superiors, who then for all intents and purposes brushed it off?

This is not Britney Spears/Anna Nicole/Michael Jackson/celebrity du jour stuff here.

Serious questions have been raised about how the service branches handle cases like this, and they need to be answered. It does in no way lessen the importance or impact of other news stories.

The major networks breaking in to cover local car chases I have a problem with. This story, however, deserves some mention. Above-the-fold coverage, or lead coverage outside of her hometown? Maybe not. But it deserves coverage nevertheless, and I really take issue with your labeling any reporting of this crime being done solely as "entertainment value."

13. We'll see how it plays out.
I agree that there's some value in a national conversation about coverups of crimes within the military (although not enough examination of the "gung-ho" culture of the volunteer forces), but this story has Nancy Grace written all over it. My guess is that the sordid nature of the crime and the story of her pregnancy and his connection with the baby will far outstrip the angle about needed reforms in the military culture.

15. The importance of this story lies in the fact
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 10:51 AM by pinerow
that women serving in the military are more likely to be raped by their own 'fellows in arms' than killed by hostile fire in either Afghanistan or Iraq...it is hardly a 'local' issue and should be tracked in order to expose the lie that 'justice prevails in the so-called military justice system.

16. Not only that.
She disappeared under what any reasonable person would consider to be suspicious circumstances. And the Marines still did nothing about it.

I'm not at all a fan of Mike Turner (the 3rd District Ohio representative) but he is not letting the Corps off the hook on this, and for that I have to hand it to him. There is a double standard, apparently, in how the military treats its women members, which is totally unaccepable and outrightly dangerous.

Yeah, there are a lot of "salacious" details in this story but I think there are enough interested and concerned parties out there who will not allow the story to sink to that sordid level.
