'World peace' hitcher is murdered
Source: BBC

An Italian woman artist who was hitch-hiking to the Middle East dressed as a bride to promote world peace has been found murdered in Turkey.

The naked body of Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, known as Pippa Bacca, was found in bushes near the city of Gebze on Friday.

She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people.

Turkish police say they have detained a man in connection with the killing.

36. Dunno if it was
Peace Pilgrim walked over the U.S. for almost 30 years. She died in a car crash--someone had offered her a ride. I guess you could say "but it was another era" and "but it was in her own country" and other "buts."

Her message: "This is the way of peace: Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love."

19. that means nothing
Of all the people I've met who've "hated women" it was one singularly evil woman who had the most hate for her own sex.

Thankfully she lives far away now.

38. So?
Lots of women hate other women....traditionally, our culture has taught young girls not to trust other women....they are 'competition' for the guys.

As a youth in a more civilized time, we hitch hiked often.

42. You were right...I thought
the poster was a man...so the 'rib comment.' But that doesn't mean that women can't be misogynists.

The 'rib comment' has nothing to do with Adam....more to do with Eddie Murphy and Marilyn Manson...?

Specifically Eddie's 'Raw' concert.

God, and all along I was taught to trust people until they didn't earn it. I can remember the hitchhiking though. We did until a friend picked up a guy with a bag that had his friend's head in it.

her post was like, she had it coming and does she expect to become a saint for her egocentric action, blah blah, I can't believe it's real.... but... that's why they're on ignore (and are on mine now also), as I have other people there, and when I see a bunch of people questioning a comment being disgusting, I laugh and say, one of my ignored people is still annoying people!

25. No she's not a saint....
...and I must say I'm surprised by your comment. I know you're upset though. And it seems a waste. She was an artist trying to bring attention to our larger problems and the need for world peace, and got caught-up in our everyday problems and became a victim of a crime instead.

If anything, I'll give her credit for putting her beliefs into actions -- something that most of us don't, or won't take the time to do. No, she's no saint. There are no saints. There's just us down here killing each other in everyway we can think of....

"No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee."

Sure it was dumb, but what she did was also incredibly brave. Few of us can say even that much about anything we do. Most of the things I do are not only dumb but also cowardly and inconsequential. As for the world, "it" is still accountable for "its" choices.

Sadly, there are many throughout this world that can never leave others alone., psychopaths and sociopaths abound...but there are always people that hold true to the hope that can help change a small part of this world.

May she RIP with the knowledge that rather than just talk or type on the net, she actually attempted to make a change.

27. I feel sorry for her family, but what a fucking idiot.
Just because it's a "foreign" country doesn't mean that there aren't "bad neighborhoods."

Her FIRST mistake was separating from her travelling companion. There's always safety in numbers.

I'd infer, from the information articulated in the article, that robbery and perhaps rape were the motive:

Ms di Marineo was hitch-hiking from Milan to Lebanon with a fellow artist on their "Brides on Tour" project.

They had separated in Istanbul, planning to reunite in Beirut. ...An Italian embassy official told the Associated Press news agency police tracked the man when he put a new SIM card into Ms di Marineo's mobile phone.

Local media identified the suspect only by the initials MK and said he had a previous conviction for theft.

41. and yet women travel alone all over the world as solo travelers
i would say that there is quite a large contingent of older women who travel alone in countries where they don't know the language (you can't possibly know EVERY language of EVERY country where you might travel, that isn't how it works)

i travel alone frequently and i travel to places where i don't speak the language at times

you just can't live your life in fear, with the attitude that, well, i can't do anything alone without someone holding my hand because i'm a woman

you learn by going where you have to go

most people aren't out to kill you, and most countries don't have the violent crime rate of the usa

that said, i don't hitch rides in any country, but in many parts of the world it is a much more accepted away of getting around than it is in the usa, we don't realize how much we isolate ourselves because of our high crime rate and our inability to get control of our violent crime

i'm telling you, women travel alone all over the world, every day, most of them don't get murdered and brutalized, that's why the story is NEWS instead of on the back pages, what happened to this woman is very rare and very sad

you do have to be cautious but you can't live your life waiting to travel somewhere or to follow your dream until someone else can come along and hold your hand

i know several women who have traveled to turkey (and plan to do so myself when i get the opportunity) and their experiences were overwhelmingly positive

Beyond the very real, far more important grief felt by her family and friends.

They could carve this story in letters 100 ft. tall on the side of the Grand Canyon, it so perfectly mirrors humanity's likely future epitaph.

Most people are kind and can be trusted. But it only takes one who can't to create a tragedy, and while it is both tragic and deplorable, it's ultimately not enormously surprising that on a journey like this she ultimately encountered such a one.
