In Searching for New Job, Gonzales Sees No Takers

WASHINGTON — Alberto R. Gonzales, like many others recently unemployed, has discovered how difficult it can be to find a new job. Mr. Gonzales, the former attorney general, who was forced to resign last year, has been unable to interest law firms in adding his name to their roster, Washington lawyers and his associates said in recent interviews.

He has, through friends, put out inquiries, they said, and has not found any takers. What makes Mr. Gonzales’s case extraordinary is that former attorneys general, the government’s chief lawyer, are typically highly sought.

A longtime loyalist to George W. Bush dating to their years together in Texas, Mr. Gonzales was once widely viewed as a strong candidate to be the first Hispanic-American nominated one day to the Supreme Court. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he carried an impressive personal story as the child of poor Mexican immigrants.

Despite those credentials, he left office last August with a frayed reputation over his role in the dismissal of several federal prosecutors and the truthfulness of his testimony about a secret eavesdropping program. He has had no full-time job since his resignation, and his principal income has come from giving a handful of talks at colleges and before private business groups.

“Maybe the passage of time will provide some opportunity for him,” said one Washington lawyer who was aware of an inquiry to his firm from a Gonzales associate. “I wouldn’t say ‘rebuffed,’ ” said the lawyer, who asked his name not be used because the situation being described was uncomfortable for Mr. Gonzales. “I would say ‘not taken up.’ ”

While he has not taken any full-time job, friends said he was probably receiving as much income from speaking engagements as he did as attorney general with its annual salary of more than $191,000. Places like Washington University in St. Louis, Ohio State University and the University of Florida have paid him about $30,000 plus expenses for appearances, and the business groups pay a bit more, said sources at the schools and elsewhere who are familiar with the arrangements. Pomona College debated inviting him and decided he was not worth the money, the college newspaper reported.

His first speech at the University of Florida last November was interrupted by protesters dressed as detainees.

8. Wow, that's unusual for that bunch
I always thought that they took care of their own who "took one for the team".

Latest thing to go down the tubes in America: honor amongst the republicans. Hey, Fredo, just write a book. Some benighted Con-friendly house will publish it, members of the Conservative Book Club will drink this stuff up like the Kool-aid that it is. It'll get pride-of-place on the bookshelf right next to "Silent Coup".

Normally I'd charge for consulting work, mind, but since I have sympathy for others who sacrifice and get not joy for it, this one's for free.

His speaking engagements will soon dry up, then where will he be?

Maybe once Shrub is out of office they can hide in Paraguay together. That is if Shrub carries him along once more. Two Yale evil idiots ...

We're not a law firm, but we are organized similar to a law firm (as are almost all our competitors).

My partners are uber competent and earn money. And I trust them with my life.

I would not want a toadie doofus as a partner. I'm betting even the Repubic-dominated firms are more interested in money and competence than in having this doofus on their letterhead.

I'm betting they are hedging their bets. If (I mean when) a Dem gets in with a Democratic Congress, no law firm will want Gonzo on their payroll. He will be poison. However, if McCain and the fascists win, Gonzo will be welcomed with open arms. So, he probably won't know his fate until after the election.

I hear tell there are lettuce-picking jobs goin' at 50 bucks per hour that good Americans just won't take - so there's no excuse for not being gainfully employed.

I think it is our obligation as caring and concerned humans to help this poor man as much as we can. Arresting him, trying him for war crimes, finding him guilty, and locking him up for the rest of his life will ensure that he never has to worry about a job (or a roof over his head) for the rest of his life. Its the least we can do for one who is suffering so.

54. Even his mentors won't touch him...
Most expected Vinson & Elkins to take him without any hesitation given their total disregard for the law as indicated by the Batson Report with regard to their role as outside counsel for Enron but apparently even they won't touch him. And they taught him most of the tricks of his trade so to speak. Most if not all.

He probably could write the most telling of the tell-all books but of course he also could probably also write himself a ticket into prison by doing so.

More than likely he has sufficient wealth at this point to not have to worry about it. Or even care.

61. Bugs me that universities pay him so much to spread his lies. The redeeming
aspect is that his speeches are usually heavily protested, aren't they?

Somewhere there has to be a prison with many large rocks that desperately need to be broken into smaller rocks by a dedicated prisoner.

69. Shit, not even Halliburton? Not even Boeing?
My opinion's changed--Gonzalez is a true hero. He threw his career, his integrity, his moral character, and his honesty all onto a grenade to save his president. A president who now laughs at him.

70. Isn't Regent University hiring?
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 02:24 PM by KansDem
Regent University is the nation's academic center for Christian thought and action, with a multitude of on-campus and online programs available worldwide. Our academic standards for both our graduate and undergraduate programs are high and our programs rigorous. But what sets Regent apart is our mission to prepare capable men and women to excel both in mind and spirit. Our students, faculty and administrators share a calling, founded on biblical principles, to make a significant difference in our communities, our cities, our nation and our world.

Regent University

I seem to recall he hired a lot of their graduates to "represent the American people." Maybe he should check there...

edited for spelling

77. They're waiting until January 21
He'd be a great fit for any number of right-wing think tanks. The problem they face is Fredo, as it now stands, is at immediate risk of going to prison. If I was the head of a think tank, the prospect of spending $50,000 to buy him a chair, get him a computer, hire a secretary, order business cards and change the letterhead isn't too appealing when there's a risk that two US Marshals could walk through the door at 9 tomorrow and drag him out by the ankles.

But the minute Shrub pardons him for any crimes which he may or may not have committed either now, in the past or in the future, the world's his oyster. And y'know, the prospect of having to powder his nose and put on a suit seven times a year to make $210,000 really doesn't sound all that bad.
