Murdoch, Zell appointed to AP board...Associated Press
Published: Monday April 14, 2008

WASHINGTON — Rupert Murdoch and Sam Zell, two media figures who led major newspaper acquisitions in recent months, are among four new members joining the board of directors of The Associated Press, it was announced Monday at the news cooperative's annual meeting.
In other results, four incumbent directors were re-elected to three-year terms. They are William Dean Singleton, who is vice chairman and chief executive officer of MediaNews Group and chairman of the AP board; Jon K. Rust, publisher of the Southeast Missourian and co-president of Rust Communications; Michael E. Reed, chief executive officer of GateHouse Media Inc., and Victor F. Ganzi, president and chief executive officer of Hearst Corp.
In addition to Murdoch and Zell, the new members are Donna J. Barrett, president and chief executive officer of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., and Craig A. Dubow, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gannett Co.
Barrett and Zell, who is chairman and chief executive officer of Tribune Co., were elected to three-year terms, while Dubow was elected to a one-year term to fill an unexpired vacancy.
Murdoch, chairman and chief executive officer of News Corp., was appointed by the board until the next election of directors to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Jay Smith, who announced earlier this month he was retiring as president of Cox Newspapers

1. Don't know. But it's just another reason to be glad I don't work there anymore.

REALLY sorry to hear this. I remember being happy there, and proud to be part of that organization because its integrity was beyond question. The only thing that was ever questionable was their spending priorities. We used to have a "wire service joke: Part one: You can't spell "CHEAP" without AP. Part two: You can't spell "STUPID" without UPI.

2. The AP has been suspect to me
for a while now... I have learned to pay close attention to the writers before I pay attention to the validity of their stories...

Aside from a few good reporters, they slant very right, imo.

3. Welcome to DU.
It's seriously regrettable. This was one of the Grand Old Ladies of information brokerage. I mean - it's the AP! I had a friend I'd see at various press events, and she'd talk about how the general impression was that there was a certain "cachet" about working for the AP. Positive cachet, that is. I guess that's over, too, now.

:(

12. That had to be the first thing in their "minds" the moment they saw the first message from a sane
person posted on a message board. It probably gets them crazy knowing we've STILL been able to find information even though they've nearly cut off all access to real news.

We learned some time ago that the government is able to, and DOES get information from libraries on what books people have read, as well as book purchases from book sellers.

If we should try to pass messages on street corners they'll probably step up production of their DRONES, for chrissakes to follow everyone around!

One way or another they do mean to control everything as soon as they can figure out how to accomplish it, and that will include the right-wingers, too, who are just too stupid to have figured this out, yet.

20. Yup, Judi Lynn............
"One way or another they do mean to control everything as soon as they can figure out how to accomplish it, and that will include the right-wingers, too, who are just too stupid to have figured this out, yet."

I always ask my Republican friends, "Just what kind of country do you want to live in?" They are shaping it with the things they are willing to put up with. Can you imagine their outrage if A Democratic President was lying about the reasons for a war, wiretapping the entire nation or engaging in torture? These idiots would be up in arms, literally. Hypocrisy! Where will it end? It won't be pretty.

and they do control the propoganda News

Anybody asking me for reliable links from now on I'm going to ask Reliable would that be what News links???

Lately the Press gets the news after others do... Its so pathetic but Murdoch is old and getting senile
the OLD regime is dying

the more they close their fingers of power the more it slips away

It is something to see US News turning into the Stalinist Propoganda machine

19. This will only accelerate the rampant Bushification of the AP that has been in place for a long time
Sure things could get worse, they always can. But let us not kid ourseleves that AP was trustworthy before this.

Like all Amerikan Media these days, it is NOT trustworthy and often not only pushesd Bushies lies but also often reads like it was edited by Bushie Lingusitic POsychometrists to make sure all of Newt's (and that monster Frank Luntz's) "Defining words" are in the article subconsciously slanting the reader to a pro-Bushler position.

25. Murdoch's goal to control all information and detroy unbiased reporting
Traditional journalism is dead. AP was wretched as it was. Now it will lose all credibility. Murdoch is buying established papers to try to convince people that's he's legitimate - that he's not a propagandist. It won't work. I hope many quit the AP.

It's basically up to bloggers at this point and maybe this will create a kind of peer review network among the blogger community. Though that kind of exists now.
