Obama calls elitism attack "political silly season"
Source: R

"I am amused about this notion of elitist, given that when you're raised by a single mom, when you were on food stamps for a while when you were growing up, you went to school on scholarship," he told a town hall meeting of U.S. military veterans in western Pennsylvania.

"We lived for the first 13 years of our marriage up until three years ago in a three-bedroom condo without a garage so if you live in Chicago that means you're scraping ice every morning," he said in rejecting the elitist label.

"When somebody makes that argument, particularly given that I've spent my entire life working with workers in low-income communities to try to make people's lives a little bit better, that's when you know you're in political silly season," said Obama, who leads Clinton in the tight race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"This is what we do politically when we start getting behind in races, and we start going on the attack," he said.

1. It is absurd
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 04:47 PM by Juche
I realize Hillary & McCain have had their problems, but McCain is married to a multimillionaire and Hillary hasn't had to worry about money for 30 years, and both have benefitted very heavily from family connections. Either of them throwing around the term elitist is laughable. What is sad is that people will believe it anyway. A black guy who worked with the poor most of his life is an elitist, and someone who used family connections to get into politics and is married to a multimillionaire heiress is a man of the people.

We've already had 8 years of a Prez you can "sit down and have a beer with". See the result? I want someone smarter! Why would this card play out again? I don't think it's gonna work this time around.

13. This was ALWAYS silly ...

The man is a self proclaimed recovered alcoholic. How could I have a beer with him if he isn't a lying hypocrite?

Honestly, this government is 'OWNED' no matter how legit you may appear to the public. Obama will be faced with it. It is also very dangerous to oppose it.

Obama will need to walk on eggshells. Remember what they did to John F Kennedy?

were saying that obviously Obama doesn't know anything about duck hunting because he referred to Hillary as using a six shooter.

Now I know why television comedies used to require a laugh track. These guys are absolutely humor impaired!

4. That's what I expected him to say
I never understood the poll numbers that showed him doing better with the affulent. He's the poster child for the fight against poverty. I think Clinton's on the right side of this issue as well, I just fear the result of the general election if she's in it.

10. Welcome to the silly country, Obama..
Has anyone been analyzing our political system lately? I'm sorry, but it is a total screwed up farce. We accuse our opponents of fathering minority offspring to strangers, turn decorated veterans into traitors and cowards, fabricate war heroes out of deserters, nit pick comments from religious ministers from the past 20+ years, and we totally ignore that we are raping the land and that we have bankrupt our nation's future with illegal and aggressive wars against nations that have done NOTHING to us. We ignore that "trivia". We ignore that twisted old men want to bring us into more war. We ignore that the "elitists" in this country have been getting the breaks along with the corporations while "we the people" take it in the ass over and over and over again.

We even stretch this insanity out over a year and a half now so we can all get totally turned off and immune to any truth or fact.

This nation is f*cked!! Our political system is dead!

"...that's when you know you're in political silly season.." <cough, cough> It isn't a season, it's a country! It's call the US of A. Nutsville!! Jesus-land. Welcome to the loony bin. Look at who we've had for the past 7+ years, and you think that's someplace respectable? Get serious!!

15. The Obama Campaign Needs Our Support.
Volunteer, contribute time and money if you can. We can be the differnce. Our voice is more powerful that the powerful special

interest and the few connected. Yes we must hope and believe in that hope that we are taking our government back our country back. As the non-Obama

supporters to check out Obama's document "Blueprint For Change"... It is an impressive outline of change that we can believe in... If you want to know

about Obama's "Agenda", this document is where you will learn the truth and you will likely be pretty surprised. If you continue to allow the media to

brainwash you with garbage about who Barack Obama is and what he stands for, without having the thoughtfulness, judgment or character to find out for

yourself then your probably an old fool who has been so condition to be suckered you just take it naturally. Young people are taking more responsibility

in this election like never before as they see their parents and grandparents hurting and struggling and bitter and feeling nearly helpless due to the

harse economic strain.

22. The "Silly Season" is when you're scraping ice in June...
...and probably walking miles uphill coming and going to do so.

America has a great capacity for silliness, so Senator Obama had best be prepared for a belly full of it if he gets the nomination.

23. That's a good response.
"Silly season" is friendly but demeaning to those who would feign outrage. Reagan employed similar responses effectively in the 80's.
