Gordon Brown to meet Wall Street bankers
Source: BBC

Prime Minister Gordon Brown will urge Wall Street bankers to reveal their financial losses quickly during his three-day trip to the United States. Mr Brown believes the move is necessary to help end a global credit crunch.

He will begin his stay by having breakfast at the United Nations with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The prime minister will also be meeting President George W Bush and Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke to discuss problems with the world market.

Later in the week Mr Brown plans to meet presidential hopefuls Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain to talk about bilateral relations between Britain and the US.

2. He became a convert...he's now the Vatican's boy.
He's also trying to get a job at Yale University.

Fitting isn't it? Jesuit controlled religion and Skull & Bones.

The international mafias seem to be an inviting change to many.

3. There's a thread about that in the UK forum!
Just started it has!

As to Brown vs Blair, Brown has yet to make the same level of cock-ups as Blair. He's got his own problems to face though.

That said, I don't think he will be as noticeable to Americans as Blair. He's more low key to begin with, and generally seen as more of an economics then an "adventures in foreign policy" politician.

That's what a friend of mine in London calls him (sort of a poke at his time in the Exchequer).

Seems like a competent fellow, but with what's come out of Labor over the past several years, I don't know whether he'll survive elections.

Well there's a good test of that in a couple of weeks when we have London Mayoral, London assembly and local government elections. The one that will be of most interest here is the London Mayoral contest, where the Labour incumbent (Ken Livingstone, who is as progressive a politician as you will get these days) is facing a strong challenge from an upper class twit called Boris Johnson for the Conservatives.

Here are some useful threads from the UK forum about all this

5. Brown Will Press Bush on Response to Credit Crisis (Update2)
By Kitty Donaldson

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Gordon Brown will press U.S. leaders this week to work through the United Nations and International Monetary Fund on issues ranging from the worldwide surge in credit costs to conflict in Iraq and Zimbabwe.

The British prime minister will meet President George W. Bush tomorrow and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke in Washington later. He will visit Wall Street bankers in New York today and set out his foreign policy in a speech in Boston on April 18.

Brown is attempting to insulate the Labour government from political fallout from the collapse of the subprime mortgage market in the U.S., which raised borrowing costs around the globe and prompted U.K. mortgage lenders to choke off credit to consumers. Brown, who took office in June, also wants to distance himself from Tony Blair's support for Bush and the war in Iraq ...
