State senator wants ban on foreign-made flags (OH)
Source: AP

April 16, 2008 11:05 AM ET

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio retailer that sells an imported U.S. or Ohio flag could be fined up to $500 or sent to jail for up to 60 days, under a bill introduced by a state lawmaker.

Republican state Sen. Joy Padgett says many flags carried in parades around Ohio are not made in the country they represent. Testifying before a Senate panel on Tuesday, Padgett said it was paramount that Ohio bar the sale of flags manufactured in China and other countries.

Padgett says she was spurred by a constituent from Coshocton (kuh-SHAHK'-tuhn), a hardware store owner who learned from a relative in Minnesota about that state's tough ban on foreign flag sales passed last year.

Good. I always thought it was ridiculous that US flags were made in China along with military uniforms, etc.

Maybe this Joy Padgett should put some effort into speaking out on the effects of "free trade" and the like.....and what it's doing to OH citizens, as well as those nationally.

2. Nope...
I've looked out of curiosity's sake for years and they're all made in China.

17. Isn't Findlay "Flag City USA"?
I think they do make more flags there than anywhere else in the US. If this repub is from Findlay it would explain a lot.

4. hey, EVERYTHING is made in one foreign country or another . . .
the nation that used to be the world's greatest manufacturing center now makes virtually nothing -- no tvs, no steel, no clothing, and soon probably no cars . . .

"as GM goes, so goes the nation" . . .

8. What I find more ridiculous
is that most in the US seem to have no problem with using and abusing others national resources and products, gaining huge amounts of resources, taking advantage of the poor and working class in a multitude of nations. But then, when it is something identifiably American, there is some sort of outrage. As if a polyester flag, made of chemical fibers from some stinking factory in the third world can ONLY be sewn with American hands on American machines on American soil. Puh-lease. This faux-outrage would be better aimed at the monopolistic and inhumane practices sanctioned by the West, Western business and Western governments.

I find it hard to work up a sense of righteous outrage about the manufacture of a piece of outdated nationalism when people are starving, dying and without drinking water.

14. Poison pet food - lead painted toys - OK - but not the flag, by golly!
So its OK to poison us and our pets with stuff made in China, but gee whiz, by golly - its gonna be a CRIME to have a flag that isn't made in the US.

Priorities out of whack much?

19. Somebody has too much time on her hands
Don't get me wrong. I love America and I buy American flags and I make sure that the flags I buy are made in the good ol' USA.

But I think we have more important things to worry about.

20. OK
I can see being annoyed with the flag not being made here. It pisses me off too. I can even see banning the sales, and charging a fine. However, JAIL time for this BS is just way, way out of line. These asshole idiots need to stop throwing around jail sentences for every little fucking thing. Our jails are full enough, but people that throw out crap like this probably wouldn't even have a clue about that.

What a useless fucking idiot.

said it was paramount that Ohio bar the sale of flags manufactured in China and other countries.

This country is falling to shit and useless shit like this is paramount?
