US needs more war funds by June-Bush budget chief
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, April 16 (Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday warned that the U.S. Congress must approve additional money for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by the end of May or risk the start of Defense Department layoff notices.

"Congress needs to fund our troops by Memorial Day," White House Budget Director Jim Nussle told the Senate Appropriations Committee. "Failure to act quickly could result in an unfortunate replay of last December, when furlough warnings were issued" by the Pentagon, Nussle added.

The Republican budget director was referring to layoff warnings for some noncombat personnel at the end of 2007, just before Congress finished work on $70 billion in additional money for the wars.

That $70 billion was a portion of about $172 billion requested early last year by President George W. Bush for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

3. Close the whole Pentagon
My apologies to anyone who works there - it's nothing personal.

But the World Misery Index would drop a significant percentage if the United States just quit funding militarism and using violence as the option of first resort.

7. I say
don't give them another cent. Bush has already shown he'll misappropriate funds from other areas (despite this being illegal), and we know from Walter Reed and the lack of vehicles and armor that the money has nothing to do with actually materially supporting the troops in the field. They even tried to make wounded vets PAY BACK their bonuses.

Seriously, if Congress voted to stop funding any activities except those absolutely essential to the basic functioning of government and truly necessary public services (what little they still fund, that is), I wonder what would happen? Not that they'd do this, just a thought experiment. I wonder when people would start marching on the capitol and perform citizens' arrest on BushCo?

We've already sold our grandchildren's futures to China. 3 trillion last I heard. Do we even HAVE any money left - other than the worthless paper the Fed prints and sells to the gov't?
