House puts impeachment bill aside

By TOM FAHEY
State House Bureau Chief

Concord – The House debated, then declined to take a final vote today on a resolution that called for impeachment of President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. After 45 minutes of debate, the House tabled the resolution on a vote of 227-95.

The resolution’s author, Rep. Betty Hall, D-Brookline, said impeachment would uncover the facts behind secrets the Bush Administration has fought to protect. She said impeachment would bring out the truth about the decisions to wage the war in Iraq, use of the Justice Department for political purposes, details of domestic surveillance and the torture of prisoners.

Hall, 87, drew support from both political parties during public hearings on the bill, but it emerged from a House committee with a 10-5 vote recommending it be killed.

Rep. Kris Roberts, D-Keene, chair of the House State Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee, said the resolution expects too much from a Congress that has little time to handle other affairs including the run-up to November elections. He said part of the blame for event stemming from Iraq should be laid with Congress.“If Congress had done its job, the President would have had to ask a declaration of war,” he said. After the first Iraq war in 1991, Americans believed victory would be quick and easy, “so members of Congress abrogated their responsibility,” Roberts said.

2. "If Congress had done its job"
Isn't that something? Defending Congress' decision to not do its job by reason of the fact that...it didn't do its job before! Of COURSE we shouldn't ask Congress to do anything NOW, since the reason we are where we are is BECAUSE they failed....jeez this takes the cake for creative reasoning.

Regarding how busy Congress is, seriously it's not that time-consuming. Good bills die or are vetoed after Bush says 'I'll veto." Bad bills get passed one way or another. They don't even seem to read most of what comes their way - else maybe we wouldn't have the MCA and PATRIOT and so on.

The election is a BS excuse. It's APRIL. There's 7 whole months between now and the election. With the evidence that's already public knowledge impeachment would take a couple weeks maybe. There are ALREADY resolutions to impeach. Don't tell me they're "too busy" to FULFILL THEIR OATHS OF OFFICE. That's the ONLY business they are obligated to pursue.

3. I'm so ashamed of my House of Reps
as a New Hampsherite - I believe they should have allowed it to be voted up or down.

5. These clowns must be counting on us being sick and tired of being utterly infuriated.
Listen to their preposterous "reasonings" to justify doing nothing. As twisted as corkscrews, goddamn America!
