Chrysler opens engineering office in China
Source: Detriot Free Press

April 17, 2008

Chrysler LLC has opened an engineering office in Shanghai, China, part of a much larger expansion by the Auburn Hills automaker to beef up its product design efforts outside the United States.

By the end of the year, Chrysler plans to hire about 1,000 new engineers outside the United States, Frank Klegon, Chrysler executive vice president for product development, told the Free Press in an interview.

"When you start being able to do your product development ... it shows our commitment. ... It's not just import and hope to sell," Klegon said. "We're going to localize and develop for those customers."

The new hires will be part of the efforts to create so-called Centers of Excellence in China, India, Mexico and Eastern Europe. The hiring spree comes as the automaker is cutting jobs in the United States and Canada -- as many as 25,000 by next year.

Just this month, for example, Chrysler announced an outsourcing deal with two computer companies that will lead to several hundred information-technology jobs being lost at its Auburn Hills headquarters -- a move the company says will not only save money but allow the companies to better serve computer users.

4. Once all the jobs are outsourced who will they sell their crap to?
The Chinese can't buy a $30,000 automobile. The Europeans are not gong to buy their crap either. When we are all out of jobs or working for minimum wage we will not be buying their cheap crap from China either.
Who in the hell do they think they are going to sell this shit to?

6. The streets of Shanghai are full of Volkswagen Passats
Or Santanas as they call them outside the US. I don't think the Passat is an el-cheapo car, and somebody is buying hundreds of thousands of them over in Shanghai. And,in other cities in China, too.

Buicks are pretty popular cars in China, too.

18. Buick has been doing business and building cars in China for years
Google results for the query "Buick in China";

I fail to understand why people think Chrysler opening a facility, Engineering or otherwise in China, is such a horrible thing. There are German companies that have operations here in the US. Is that a bad thing? Ditto the Japanese, the Italians, the French, The Koreans, etc.

They are putting an engineering facility inside a country in which they wish to expand their market share.

Not all cars can or should emanate from Detroit.

7. "Who in the hell do they think they are going to sell this shit to?" - you and me
.
.
.

They've been doing it for decades,

and with the USA dollar dropping like a stone

They, the Chinese, are in control.

USA is OUT of control, on many fronts.

The World noticed.

9. GM and all the German car makers also make a ton of product in China
I'm pretty sure the Japanese do as well, or are in the process of moving manufacturing over there.

10. I'm sure most parts these days are made in China
But that's not my point.
I dont care where Japanese auto companies make their parts - I'm simply not supporting treasonous American Companies any longer. They aren't supporting Americans - Phuck 'em!

Even if I have to buy a Japanese car next time. Phuck 'em

11. but then
you'd be supporting a Japanese company that has outsourced their work to China, the US and Canada instead of an American company that has outsourced its work to China, Canada & Mexico.

:banghead:

I don't care about the parts from non-American Companies. I don't fault the Chinese for taking advantage of this.

I do care that an American company is flushing OUR workers and economy down the toilet and that the Fascist elitists that run that company are getting rich in the process.

I cannot support an American company that is sticking a knife between our collective ribs and laughing all the way to the bank.

once again - PHuck 'em

why my dh's union, IBEW, wants us to buy cars from American car companies. It's obviously not helping the American worker! Are they making more Hondas here now than Chryslers?
