Delta reports $6.4B loss in first quarter
Source: USAToday

ATLANTA (AP) — Delta Air Lines, the nation's third-largest carrier, says its loss widened in the first quarter to a whopping $6.39 billion due to soaring fuel prices and the steep decline in the company's market value.

The results badly missed Wall Street expectations, despite a 12% increase in sales.

The Atlanta-based company said Wednesday the loss is equivalent to $16.15 a share. That compares with a loss of $130 million that Delta reported in the year-ago January-March quarter, when it was still in bankruptcy.

Excluding special items, primarily a $6.1 billion non-cash charge relating to the decline in Delta's market value due to sustained record fuel prices, the airline lost $274 million, or 69 cents a share, in the first quarter.

Analysts expected a loss of 49 cents a share, excluding one-time items.

1. I call for the President to get his useless ass out of our most sacred place...
and let someone that knows what they are doing take over (and certainly that does not mean Cheney).

2. They can start by disbanding DHS
and stop humiliating people who don't want to do anything but fly from point A to point B. Air travel is already unpleasant enough with sardine seating. The shoe removal, random pat downs and horror stories about real harassment add just enough discouragement that people are vacationing close to home...or at home.

The TSA has nothing to do with security and everything to do with harassing and humiliating free citizens.

4. We live not far from Orlando Int'l
I'd guess Delta, Southwest and AirTrans are the biggest carriers here (judging only by how many we see in the sky). We've been here for five years and love watching the planes. Well, in the last month or so there's been a noticeable drop off in air traffic at OIA. Southwest is still prevalent in the skies, as are the overseas flights. But it's turned downright spooky quiet overall.

There also seems to be an increase in what I've termed "creative ATC'ing", with incoming flights taking some bizarre paths to the airport. It's hard to describe, but basically where planes used to always line up miles out in an orderly fashion for landings, we now often see only one or two planes and they cut across the formerly busy landing paths to make their final approach, sometimes making wicked hand-brake turns in the process. Hubby says it's almost as if the ATC has told the pilot, "The sky is yours, bring it in any way you like."

Just anecdotal of course, but from what we see there's been a significant drop-off in domestic passenger flights.
