Times columnist (Friedman) pied in face by activist
Source: Brown (University) Daily Herald

A female audience member ran on stage last night and threw a green pie at New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, who had just begun a lecture on environmentalism in Salomon 101. The woman had been sitting in the south side of the auditorium's front row when she pulled the pie out of a Brown Bookstore plastic bag that had been tucked in a red backpack and leapt out of her seat.

At the same time the woman threw the pie, a male accomplice seated a few rows back ran down the aisle and onto the stage, throwing small pamphlets explaining the actions into the crowd.

After the pie hit Friedman and splattered on his face and torso, the two jumped offstage and ran out of the southeast exit of the building, followed closely by a man trying to catch them. A police officer also ran toward the exit but stayed inside.

The thrower was eventually caught by police, who detained her in Salomon's lobby before moving her elsewhere.

5. This is just too much effort to waste on such a loser
Actually spending money on pies and tickets and pamphlets and spending time waiting for and listening to Friedman just to throw a pie at him. There are many other better things to do with all that effort than to waste it on that loser.

15. I love
to see people get what they deserve. I thought the pie was a pretty strained response to Friedman's cheerleading this country into an immoral war .

Hurray for our young people who, like us, are mad as hell and won't take it anymore.

6. Charles Krauthamer Deserves Full Vollies
Charles Krauthammer deserves full vollies of pies for beating the drums for war with Iraq. Let us hope that some civic-minded American patriots are at the right places at the right times with the right pastries.

8. Friedman's not green. He's "GEO-green."
That's his way of not having to apologize for the millions he made off the world is flat globalization promo piece. Take green. Add "geo."

What a relief that he cleared the terminology up for us.

11. HA HA HA HA HAHAAAAAAA!!
She must have had to throw the pie down. I've seen Friedman in person and he literally looks like he should be on a wedding cake.

I think they call that "Pies for your Lies". After all, Friedman did marry into one of DC's wealthiest families, so naturally he's one to talk about how job offshoring is so great, as is Bewsh's bold Iraq invasion.

26. Why we pied him... and FOOTAGE!
Footage available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sv6nvMUq10U

On Earth Day, we pied Thomas Friedman at the start of his keynote speech: “Green is the New Red White and Blue.” The goal was not simply to disrupt his talk and stain his ego, but to disrupt and expose all that he stands for and the university’s corporate greenwashing of its image.

In the spirit of true debate and free speech:
We hereby challenge Thomas Friedman and all other green capitalists to a duel.

This duel is about the debate over the future of life on this planet, and the ways in which corporate powers have hijacked this debate to make it the realm of “experts”, policy-makers, and consumers buying an array of “green” products. In exposing what Friedman supports, we open this debate to the public by questioning certain key elements.

Carbon Trading and Carbon Markets, enshrined in the Kyoto Protocol and the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2007, is the foundation behind green capitalism. In privatizing the atmosphere, the earth’s carbon cycling capacity is handed over as property to the same corporate criminals that caused the problem.

“Biofuels,” the much-touted alternative to oil, not only increase petroleum dependence, but are themselves a global humanitarian and environmental disaster in the making. Biofuels come at the expense of land for food, and from Indonesia to Columbia, traditional populations are being forced off their land for destructive plantations that are dependent on toxic chemicals, biotech seeds, and large petroleum-burning machinery.

The list of false solutions goes on, while the planetary clock is ticking. If there are to be truly real solutions to the many problems we face, it will come out of transformative social movements and not corporate boardrooms. For these reasons, we challenge Thomas Friedman and all other green capitalists to a duel, in which we will continue to expose their shams while pointing towards the social movements that are already creating solutions and transforming society towards a liveable, healthy, and non-corporate future.

33. Does anyone know what kind of PIE ? It might have been made by my Girlfriend!!!

My lady has a small business baking handmade traditional pies here in Providence and she sells a lot of pies to Brown University students. Her company is called "Cutie Pies"

If i know what flavor it was I can tell you if it was one of hers.
