McCain to New Orleans: Never again

NEW ORLEANS - Republican presidential candidate John McCain took stock of still-hurricane-damaged areas of New Orleans on Thursday and declared that if the disaster had happened on his watch, he would have immediately landed at the nearest Air Force base, drawing a sharp contrast to President Bush's handling of the tragedy.

McCain called the response to Hurricane Katrina "a perfect storm" of mismanagement by federal, state and local governments.

The Arizona senator walked a few blocks of the hard-hit Lower 9th Ward, passing tidy rebuilt stucco houses standing next to abandoned structures, their facades still spray-painted with the markings of rescue workers who went door to door nearly three years ago searching for bodies. Government-issued trailers still dot the neighborhood. McCain said his teenage daughter Bridget had been there with a volunteer youth group a few weeks ago to help in the recovery.

"Never again, never again, will a disaster of this nature be handled in the disgraceful way it was handled," McCain declared, a pledged he repeated over and over during the day.

Let's see... whose birthday was W celebrating in AZ that day?

Maybe Grampy should have advised W to get back on AF1 and go do some real work!

On edit, why does McCain have two flags sticking out of his fly? What else was he celebrating that day?

18. Eastlund sold out to China???????!!!!!!!! WTHeck?
But, I agree. He knew. That was part of his Misstatement when he said, "national, natural, or man-made disasters" as part of that speech. The man-made was a Freudian slip......

And, yes, China is working on the opening of the Olympics. That is the first time I have heard publicy on cable news that weather modification is a reality......

McCain knew!!!!! Watched them steer that darn storm right where they wanted it.....just like they steered the three hurricanes here in Florida in 2004 to affect voting....

Watch out for this November. Hurricanes, tornadoes, bad weather in Democratic areas....You betcha.

2. So, Umm why isn't he rushing back to Washington and demanding
that they fix the whole region.. and believe me it isn't just New Orleans that still looks like shit. They just happen to be the poster ad for one great fucking disaster that is still very much ongoing.

4. And he'd also bring in Rev. Hagee to give NO spiritual advice?
Hagee could be especially helpful to the city's Catholics. ;-)

whom Hagee blamed, out loud, in public, for "the Katrina". :grr: :banghead: :nuke:

...then what will he do with this trainwreck we call the economy? All indications are that we are in for more of the same.

10. So, why doesn't the AP "investigate" McCain's votes and positions
on Katrina relief? I don't think he has been on the repairing side.

11. New Orleans to McCain: Not now, not ever
Herewith, a delightful sampling of reaction from the city's unparalleled blogosphere:

http://peoplegetready.jockamofeenanay.com/?p=2025

For those who read this and don’t already know (don’t feel bad, John McCain apparently doesn’t either, and he thinks he’s qualified to run the country) the Lower Ninth Ward wasn’t the only neighborhood victimized by shoddy federal levees, the degradation of coastal wetlands and cypress forests, and surrounded by navigation canals. It just happens to be a neighborhood with lots of elderly, and is probably among the least capable of rebuilding without the help it deserves. Oh yeah — it also happens to be the neighborhood which had the most casualties. I guess they won’t be rebuilding no matter what f**mook ill-considered trash might spill out of John McCain’s pie hole.

Since New York City and Washington, D.C. are such a rich targets for terrorists, I guess we shouldn’t have rebuilt there either.

http://michaelhoman.blogspot.com

If I were going to see Senator McCain's song and dance show, which I'm not, and if given the chance, I would have walked up the microphone and said:

Senator McCain, welcome to the Xavier campus and to New Orleans. I appreciate that you are trying to reach out to demographics not likely to vote for you by coming here and by going to Memphis on the 40-year-anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, where you apologized for your opposition to making Martin Luther King Jr Day a national holiday, and 8 years earlier, when you apologized for saying that you saw the Confederate Flag as a symbol of heritage rather than a symbol of hate. But if I may try to solicit another apology, or get an explanation, why did you vote against the 1990 Civil Rights Act? Don't all of these things enhance you with one of your demographics, the kind that wouldn't vote for you if you had fathered a Black baby?

http://thinknola.com/post/mccain-new-orleans-plan

You mean we’ve not had enough conversations already? The McCain administration is going to hit the ground talking? At least we now know what to expect. More canned civic engagement while the city moulders.

Basically, he doesn’t know what to do. The Lower 9th Ward will be rebuilt, because it is some of the highest, driest land in the city. The levee walls failed in such a way as to flood the Lower 9th Ward, but had the levees failed on the other side, the Faubourg Marigny would have got it just as bad. People don’t understand that the Lower 9th Ward is not low ground. It is high ground and prime real estate.

The question is whether the pre-flood inhabitants of the Lower 9th Ward are going to come back to their home, or if that land is going to be packaged and sold for redevelopment. The reclamation of the Lower 9th Ward by it’s inhabitants is looking increasingly less likely with the glacial pace of recovery in this neighborhood that the media has made iconic.

John McCain punting, because he doesn’t have a plan for New Orleans. Unlike John Edwards who made New Orleans and the Gulf Coast a plank in the platform of his campaign.

Much, much more. Each blog contains a long list of links to other fine blogs. Warning: May be addictive, particularly for those who love the city (note the presence on several of a commenter named "KamaAina" :-) )

13. This ex-NOLA person asks: McCain whooooo???? Is He????
John Mccain? What has he ver done for New Orleans, South Louisiana or post-Katrina Mississippi?

NOTHING I CAN RECALL.

What did Hillary Clinton do to relieve the burdens upon us Katrina refugees?

NOTHING I CAN RECALL.

Voting time comes round politicians talk. Ultimately it's best there are less potential victims living in New orleans for the next 'Big One.'

By how FEMA did New Orleans
I find that sad but funny
To undo George’s and Brownie’s handiwork

22. Senator, it DID happen on your watch...
You're a senior member of the US Congress. You could have done something. ANYTHING.

Called for action. Called for hearings. Called for heads to roll.

But you did nothing.
