Bush: tax rebate checks going out Monday
Source: AP

Article published Friday, April 25, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Bush said tax rebates will start going out Monday, earlier than previously announced, and should help Americans cope with rising gasoline and food prices, as well as aid a slumping economy.

"Starting Monday, the effects of the stimulus will begin to reach millions of households across our country," Bush said Friday in remarks on the South Lawn of the White House.

The Internal Revenue Service had been saying direct deposits wouldn't start until next Friday. Bush said paper checks would begin going out on May 9, a week earlier than previously announced.

"The money is going to help Americans offset the high prices we're seeing at the gas pump, the grocery store, and also give our economy a boost to help us pull out of this economic slowdown," Bush said.

2. Gee, what a guy! My "rebate" is going toward paying 2007 taxes.
Not to mention, it seems I'll have to claim it on next year's state taxes.

Yep, gotta love them Bushies. They do look out for us!

10. 2 weeks ago I sent the IRS a check for $1500.
Now they'll send me back a check for $1200. It will go right back on the home equity line that I wrote the check on.

Wachovia, your fears are over.

most of the government's "rebate" money will go into the hands of the oil companies and other corporate conglomerates which daily suck the blood out of the American middle class. How very generous.

11. I am confused how this works...
I am unmarried, have a child and claimed the child tax credit and earned income credit (although it appears that this is the last year for that). I got a refund back.

Do I get a rebate?

12. Yes, you do
Your "economic stimulus" check has nothing whatsoever to do with your 2007 taxes.

14. I guess the way it has been worded in the press confused me a bit
I wasn't sure what the qualifiers were and if I met minimum requirements. My rebate is probably going to be spent by someone else though because I am probably going to use it to move to a better apartment than the crappy one I currently reside in.

16. Correction
I should not have said it has NOTHING to do with your 2007 taxes. In fact, your 2007 filing status determines the amount of your "economic stimulus." Single filers get $600, joint filers get $1200, plus you get another $300 for every dependent. There are other rules for those with non-taxable income only, and for those with high incomes.

to a gaping gunshot wound - Bush himself seems to be aware that this money will go toward helping people keep up with spiraling energy and food costs, and therefore will do little to stimulate the economy. Its primary value lies in its public relations payload.

19. Gas bills ate your rebate
When President Bush announced that the government would begin distributing economic stimulus checks on Monday, he did so in the shadow of ever-rising gas prices.

The point is to boost the flagging U.S. economy. But record gasoline prices mean that up to a third of stimulus payments could be spent buying gasoline, most of which is imported from abroad.

"The rebate goes into the tank, and then finds its way into economies far from our own," said Jared Bernstein, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal think tank.

23. FY 2008 will be my first income tax return
other than a return I filed a couple summers ago for summer work while in college.

So I get to pay for all of your rebates (as a US taxpayer for the rest of my life) and I don't even get to see what my future tax dollars are paying for. x(
