Accountant questioned in Parmalat affair found dead

John Hooper in Rome
Saturday January 24, 2004
The Guardian

The multi-billion euro Parmalat fraud appeared last night to have claimed its first victim after police disclosed that a 32-year-old accountant had thrown himself off a bridge near the company's headquarters in northern Italy. The dead man was named as Alessandro Bassi, who worked in the financial director's office.

Mr Bassi, who was married with two children, had worked closely with Fausto Tonna, Parmalat's former top financial expert and the man accused of being the architect of its vast and elaborate international scams.

1. Fell off a bridge?
Or was he hung off the bridge, and the rope broke?

2. Don't be silly, that would leave rope burns.
Pick him up, toss him over. DNA washes away.

3. Yes, of course...

It just reminded me of another Italian banker found in a similar situation for some reason. Years ago, back in the 80's.

What is it about bankers/accountants and bridges?

6. Roberto Calvi
was the one found hung under Blackfriars bridge in London.

He had his pockets full of bricks, in fulfillment of a Masonic ritual promising death to oathbreakers, iirc.

Sindona was already in jail by then.

A great book on the P2/Banco Ambrosiano scandal is "In God's Name", by David Yallop.

Very well-researched and non-tin-foil-y (no leaps to judgement).
