Zimbabwe: Recounts do not overturn any opposition wins
Source: AP

HARARE, Zimbabwe - Zimbabwe's electoral commission says a recount has confirmed the original results for 10 disputed parliamentary seats.

The commission says that six seats were taken by the opposition and four by President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, as previously reported.

The announcement makes it unlikely that Mugabe's party can wrest control from the opposition.

Mugabe's party would need a virtual clean sweep in the remaining 13 seats subject to recounts to win back majority control of the 210-seat parliament. Most of those seats were won by the opposition.

The results of the March 29 presidential election have not yet been released, and the recount has been widely seen as a delaying tactic by Mugabe's party and state election authorities.

No majority for Mugabe party in Zimbabwe recount
Sat Apr 26, 2008 7:29am EDT

By MacDonald Dzirutwe

HARARE (Reuters) - President Robert Mugabe's party has
failed to secure control of Zimbabwe's parliament in a
partial recount of March 29 elections, results showed on
Saturday, handing the ruling party its first defeat in
28 years.

Results of a parallel presidential poll have never been
released, and Mugabe has been preparing for a run-off
against Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said that in the 14
out of 23 seats recounted so far, the original results
was confirmed. ZANU-PF had triggered the recount by
accusing election officials of taking bribes to undercount
votes for Mugabe's party.

To win back a parliamentary majority, the ruling party
needed to win nine more seats than it did in the first
count. Only nine are left to be counted -- but ZANU-PF
already won three of those in the first count.

3. The DU Robert Mugabe Fan Club has been real quite lately.
I'm just not sure if they have come around on this monster, or have gone to fight alongside the ZANU-PF.
