Turkey planning new incursion into Iraq: PKK
Source: AFP

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq (AFP) - Turkey is planning a new military incursion into northern Iraq targeting Kurdish rebels, a spokesman for the guerrillas said, adding that warplanes also launched an air raid on Saturday.

"We have information that new (Turkish) troops are being gathered along the border," said Ahmed Danis, spokesman for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

"We expect Turkish troops to launch a new incursion into northern Iraq. The PKK is ready to confront any Turkish aggression."

Danis said Turkish aircraft launched a raid early on Saturday in the Khwarkuk district along the border with Turkey, the second such attack in two days.

1. I had it to understand...
that the Turkish operations this past winter were designed to disrupt PKK infrastructure, with the main effort occuring with the advent of better weather. Sounds like maybe they are gearing up for a more thorough operation.

Turkish soldiers battle Kurdish separatists

TUNCELI, Turkey: Thousands of Turkish soldiers fought Kurdish separatists Sunday in two large operations, military sources said, a day after Turkish warplanes struck at rebel targets in northern Iraq.

Two soldiers were killed in Bingol, in southeast Turkey, in an operation involving 7,000 to 8,000 soldiers.

Further south, in the provinces of Sirnak and Hakkari, which border Iraq, at least 15,000 soldiers were fighting guerrillas of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, the sources said.

Turkey has increased operations against PKK inside Turkey and, since the end of a February land offensive against guerrillas based in northern Iraq, has made a series of air strikes against PKK targets there.

The more they strike at Kurds in Iraq, the more restless the internal Kurd population becomes.
