Truckers protest gas prices in Washington, D.C.

Horns blaring, truck drivers began arriving in Washington to protest high gasoline prices.

The group, Truckers and Citizens United, plans to circle the National Mall on Monday before parking at RFK Stadium. From there, they will march and take shuttles to the Capitol, where a rally is scheduled. Organizers say about 350 vehicles were expected.

The truckers are calling on Congress to stop subsidizing big oil companies, release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, and end exports of oil from Alaska, among other things.

Many of the truckers drove to Washington from Harrisburg, Pa., and other areas to the north. One passenger held a sign that read "Enough is Enough." The sound of so many semi-truck horns blaring was deafening.

1. The other day in E/E, we calculated the SPR at about 2 months.
If they think that's going to help them, they're going to be disappointed.

Peak oil == Peak trucking.

3. Yup, 350 trucks in the city will certainly alter the basic geology of depletion.
That's going to be as effective as those crackpots who are praying for God to lower gas prices.

Get used to it. We are in the twilight years of the petroleum age. It's all down hill from here.

4. Who wants to estimate how many truckers..
.. voted GOP?

My guess: about 80 percent.

Reality bites.

5. I'd guess the opposite... 20% maybe
The truckers I met when I worked at a loading dock were mostly good people. The reason they got into it was for a sense of the freedom and the need to see the real America. Heck, even Randi Rhodes was a trucker.

I think they deserve priority among drivers when it comes to fuel cost. To say otherwise is laissez-faire capitalist. I don't drive. I intentionally waited over a year to find a job located closeby. We can't wait for employers to give us jobs close to where we live, so it's up to us to find them. But truckers don't have that option.
