RNC demands networks yank (anti-)McCain ad
Source: Associated Press

The Republican National Committee demanded Monday that television networks stop running a television ad by the Democratic Party that falsely suggests John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq.

The ad says President Bush has talked about staying in Iraq for 50 years, then plays a clip of McCain saying, "Maybe 100. That'd be fine with me."

The announcer then says: "If all he offers is more of the same, is John McCain the right choice for America's future?"

... Democratic Party chief Howard Dean said "there's nothing false" about the ad. "We deliberately used John McCain's words. This isn't some ominous consultant's voice from Washington. This is John McCain's own words. And we've been very upfront about everything that he's said."

A friend of mine had horses - she got donkeys to keep the horses company.

A few years later, she had given up the horses for the more loving burros.

31. Off topic, but I was curious about that myself.
There's a donkey/burro/mule that lives in a fenced-in yard near my house. When I walk my dog, the donkey/burro/mule will stand by his little shed and watch us. If we move behind a tree, he'll move to see us. Once we spot him, he'll turn around and run away. When we start to leave, he'll run up closer to the fence. He acts like a big dog. What a goof.

91. Ha! I'm in Egypt and see donkeys doing that every day...
Those guys are all over the place here, along with horses. I live in a city of 7 million people (Alexandria), and it's not at all unusual to look out the car window and see a donkey grinning at me in the middle of urban traffic. Same in Cairo. Many farmers come into the cities every day in donkey carts to sell their produce.

Cairo recently tried to ban animals on the city streets, but the farmers are raising a ruckus about it.

My job site is out among a bunch of little farm villages, near the Nile Delta, where many people still use donkeys for transportation and work.

I used to see one man in a village teaching his little girl how to drive the donkey cart, and I'd guess she's only 7 or 8 years old. She sure learned well. Now I see her driving it by herself, or sometimes with her friends riding in the cart. If there is a Donkey Speed Limit I'm sure she exceeds it occasionally.

Weird Useless Trivia: I've read that most of the donkeys and horses I see today are descended from animals left in Egypt by the British Army after World War I.

Which is not to malign the long and honorable lineage of the Egyptian donkey. If you ever tour the tombs at Saqqara (site of the Step Pyramid), you will see the walls decorated with ancient drawings of these noble and hard-working critters.

4. The problem isn't the 100 years
McCain has effectively cleared that up and we can decide if we want to make that sort of permanent military presense on the level of South Korea or Europe.

The problem, to me anyway, is the concept of an open ended commitment found in his language and rhetoric that blindly demands success (whatever that is) and does nothing to ensure we have partners in the attempt to ameliorate the blunder of invading and occupying Iraq.

50. True
The "100 years" quote is technically out of context because I remember him saying it would be worth it to stay for a hundred or a thousand or so on years IF we were assured that hostilities had ended there. The problem of course is with his premise, that given the way Iraq is we can be frankly pretty sure that hostilities would NEVER end as long as we stayed. And also there's the implication that McCain would consider making that kind of commitment only in the hope of that premise being met, but nevertheless with conditions being no better than they are now. And Dean did a pretty good job of clarifying that.

76. Come on, it was way out of context
The Republican are not smart enough to go produce an ad just like it and taking Clinton or Obama quotes out of context the same way the DNC did. The Republicans are silly asking to pull the ad.

In defense of all you Clinton fans, can you imagine if they put one together that had Clinton saying she was under sniper fire?

Anyhow, it is all silly. The DNC has used a stupid ploy that gives the Republicans something to talk about other than the war. I do not find that smart.

28. This is probably the stupidest thing the RNC could do...
think about it the only chance they have at winning is by running patently false and negative ads against Obama. If the media capitulates the RNC, then how can they justify negative attack ads against Obama? Also, this brings up the war in the Iraq back into the collectie psyche, and that's pretty much the last thing the repugs want. Silly repugs, paving their own way to Hell.

39. What's sad is, the RNC is trying this tactic, because they think it might work.
It's very possible that the media will rollover for the RNC & McCain, and, at worst, this is just the first instance of working the refs that the RNC will employ throughout the campaign in an attempt to keep the media in check.

How ironic that McCain's own words are off-limits, but the RNC can go after Wright, Ayers, flag pins, Bosnia...

The painting is "True Blues" by Andy Thomas (note: he did a GOP version as well called "Grand Old Gang
-- I just don't want you to be shocked when you see it)

Why is it that these people consider every word, thought, or action of Obama's former Pastor a direct link to Obama? But when their own ilk gets busted talking insanity on tape, well, you can't believe your lying eyes?

there isn't one fucking thing that Democrats could do that would stoop to the level of what was done to Kerry & Clenland back in the 2004 elections...

74. I noticed that too
"The Republican National Committee demanded Monday that television networks stop running a television ad by the Democratic Party that falsely suggests John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq."

This is par for the course for the Associated Press, though. Once again, instead of straight reporting, the author inserts bias and tells us how to think.

77. Oh, I get it. . .only Republicans are allowed to take soundbites
and produce ads and create "issues" out of context. Too bad McCain opened his mouth and the words fell out of it while he was pandering to the neo-con empire-building base. There are going to be plenty more opportunities to take McCain's poorly-chosen words and link them to his "spiritual advisers," his lobbyist campaign management, his history of reaping the personal benefits of marrying into money and receiving taxpayer-supported health care. . .

89. FALSELY???????
It's been mentioned before in this thread, but it's worth repeating.

The first line of this AP article reads:

The Republican National Committee demanded Monday that television networks stop running a television ad by the Democratic Party that falsely suggests John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq.

96. The issue is "war".
The "100 years" bit is spot on. The "war" part is deeply entrenched among avid consumers of Sound Bites (tm), the light-weight, low-calorie tv snack favored by Americans.

He was only for 100 years in Iraq if there were no US soldiers killed or injured. That's unlikely in a hot war. Unless it's the kind of war that we currently have in S. Korea and Germany (which were also in the context). But that's where the anti-JM ad takes you.

It entails that we've continued to fight a war 63 years after a supposed victory when Hitler offed himself, for 63 years after Nagasaki. Now, isn't 66 years of fighting Germany and Japan enough? (And doesn't this make claims that Iraq's lasted longer than WWII a bit problematic? It's only been what? 17 years for Iraq?)

Some examples of reductio ad absurdum are too easy.

97. I've heard the tape of McCain saying this time and time and time again.
He said 100 years. Case closed. It doesn't matter he went on to say troops might stay there the same way they're in South Korea, as peace keepers. They would still be there. 100 years. Boo hoo to the RNC.
