<Meanwhile, a strong explosion took place Saturday near a U.S. military checkpoint in Khaldiyah, west of Baghdad, and there were possible American casualties, witnesses and the military said.

"We are aware of an incident north of the Khaldiyah bridge. ... There are possible U.S. casualties," a U.S. military spokeswoman said, speaking on condition of anonymity. She said she had no other details.

Witnesses said an explosion, apparently caused by a car bomb, took place near a U.S. checkpoint at the foot of the Siddiqin bridge in Khaldiyah, 70 miles west of Baghdad. >

....Sooo Sad :(

Iraq Blasts Kill Five U.S. Troops, Four Iraqis
By REUTERS

Filed at 12:56 p.m. ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded at the entrance to an American military base in Iraq on Saturday, killing three U.S. soldiers just hours after separate blasts elsewhere left two servicemen and at least four Iraqis dead.

Witnesses said they saw a car ram a checkpoint outside the base in Khaldiya, 110 km (68 miles) west of Baghdad, and explode as a number of soldiers were getting out of a vehicle.

A U.S. Army spokesman said six soldiers were wounded. All three attacks on Saturday took place in the ``Sunni triangle'' where much of the violence against U.S.-led occupation forces and Iraqis seen to be cooperating with them has taken place.

``Three taskforce All-American soldiers were killed and six were wounded when a vehicle-born explosive device detonated at an installation in Khaldiya,'' the spokesman said, adding that several Iraqis were also wounded.

The violence came a day after two U.N. security experts arrived in Iraq to liaise with U.S.-led authorities on any future return of its staff. The United Nations pulled international staff out of Iraq last year after two suicide bomb attacks on its Baghdad headquarters.
Earlier on Saturday a bomb exploded in Samarra, killing four Iraqis and wounding 40 people, including seven U.S. soldiers who were slightly hurt. In another attack, near Falluja, 50 km (31 miles) west of the Iraqi capital, two American soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb exploded as their convoy passed.
<snip>

Since the invasion in March, 512 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, at least 354 of them in action.<snip>

42. "BRING EM ON" cried the AWOL CHIMPANZEE
and "BRING IT ON", the Resistance did.

"OH MY GOD"' cried the NEW Gold Star Mother--"My Son is DEAD".

"He died for Halliburton", reflected the Wall Street stock trader.

"He died for NOTHING", grumbled the disabled Viet-Nam vet.

"Where's our car", asked the little girl whose father was killed.

"It was repossessed by the Bank", sobbed her mother.

"The President cut our survivor's benefits". she cried.

"Get in Step YOU MAGGOTS", shouted the drill Sergeant.

"You have some RAGHEADS to kill"

"Where have all the flowers Gone?"
"Where have all the soldiers gone?"
"Gone to graveyards every one"
"When will they ever learn?"

Wept Saigon on a cold Saturday night in Green Bay Wisconsin.

Rest in Peace men and women.

announced several hours ago here, which came before this situation, so it may be 513.

36. Post-combat deaths
I asked this question on the General Discussion Forum, but here goes again:
How do they count military deaths? If someone dies later from injuries sustained IN Iraq, is that also counted, or is it only on-the-ground deaths that we see reported? I've never seen a report like, "A soldier died today from injuries sustained last week when a bomb...." In other words, is the death count quite a bit higher than the 510+ reported?

22. You're being optimistic again...
Exactly what "over" means in this context is not clear, but it will certainly be in the order of 10,000 KIA and nothing but bloody stalemate to show for it if Bush gets four more years. Look for the action to amp up again in february, as those who were holding out for a peaceful solution of the political question start to give up hope for a US pull-out. Oh yes, it will be bad.

18. AP: Five U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq Attacks
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A car bomb exploded on Saturday in Khaldiyah, a town west of Baghdad, killing three American soldiers and injuring six soldiers and several Iraqi civilians, the military said.

Two other American soldiers were killed earlier Saturday in a roadside bombing near Fallujah. The latest deaths raised to 512 the number of American service members who have died since the United States and its allies launched the Iraq (news - web sites) war March 20. Most of the deaths have occurred since President Bush (news - web sites) declared an end to major combat May 1.

Khaldiyah and Fallujah are part of the Sunni Triangle, the area in central Iraq where most of the anti-U.S. attacks by die-hard Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) loyalists have taken place. The U.S. military says the attacks have reduced in number since Saddam's arrest on Dec. 13.

In the Khaldiyah attack, a four-wheel-drive vehicle drove up to the checkpoint at a bridge and blew up in front of a Humvee that tried to block it, said a witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He said there were about 20 soldiers in the vicinity at the time.

A U.S. military spokesman said the attack took place in Khaldiyah, 70 miles west of Baghdad, killing three Americans and wounding six other soldiers.

The spokesman, who did not wish to be identified, said several Iraqi civilians were also wounded in the attack, and one of them was evacuated to a military base for treatment.

20. Despicable
A conservative argument can now be made in opposition to the war: The Baathists are out of power, most of them are captured, Saddam is captured, there are no WMD's, why are we still there? What US security interest in being served by occupying Iraq? It's not the argument I would make, but it could still be made.

To: serurier
I must say the daily drip is difficult to suffer through.

I get the sense that the insurgents will do everything they can to elect one of the Rats. The rats should know that they are giving energy to the terrorists.

The rats should have said, "Since we overwhelmingly supported the President's war in Iraq and spoke about Iraq's WMD since the mid 90's, the War in Iraq is off the table. The campaign will focus on domestic issues."

That would have been the honorable thing to do.

Iraq attacks cause fresh carnage

Five US soldiers have been killed and several others wounded in two separate attacks in Iraq, US officials say.
An earlier attack in another town in the restive Sunni triangle area left four Iraqis dead and dozens injured, including US soldiers.
In one attack in Khaldiya, west of Baghdad, an improvised car bomb killed three soldiers at a US checkpoint.
The other two died when a roadside bomb detonated as their convoy drove near the flashpoint town of Falluja.

32. 512, 513? I have a sick feeling
that we will see 1000 kia a hell of a lot faster than we saw 500. We're taking out the A team now, not all at once, but in drips and drabs, and replacing them with the B team.
Our reserve and guard units, who aren't as well trained or equipped will be bearing the brunt of whatever the hell we are doing in Iraq. To my mind all we are doing is attempting to steal a sovereign nation's natural resources, and have turned our once proud military into a mafia enforcement team.
When the draft comes, we won't even have the B team, we'll have the C,D, even the E teams, while the Iraqi's will be fielding their best on their hometurf.
We're so fucked, thank you g.w. mcchimpy*

41. 125 replies in this very forum to the death of Capt Kangaroo
a bogus "capt" and minor TV culture celebrity. What are our priorities, I wonder.

The deaths in Iraq are being brushed aside:

1. The 6 month attention span of the American public has reached its nadir.
2. The entrance and exit polling from our very own party in Iowa (and Dean's performance) indicate that even though oppossed to the war, voters care more of, jobs, the economy, and health care.

Its a damned shame
