Siegelman Hit with Travel Restrictions

Posted: April 29, 2008 05:19 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman has been barred from traveling without getting prior approval.

Siegelman tells The Associated Press that he was informed by his probation officer Tuesday afternoon that he was being classified as a special offender for travel purposes.

The classification means he must get approval from the judge overseeing his case and from the district where he seeks to travel.

The Democrat was sentenced to more than seven years in prison on corruption charges and was recently released pending his appeal.

From Mark Crispin Miller:

"From: Don Siegelman

I was told today by the Probation Office that I am now considered a 'Special Offender.'

The definition I was given reads as follows:

'Individuals identified or associated with traditional or non-traditional organized crime such as the Mafia, outlaw motorcycle gangs, Asian gangs, prison gangs, etc.,persons identified as potential terrorists, kidnappers, members of a supremacy group, major bookmakers, major drug or weapon traffickers, pronographers, sex offenders, armed bank robbers, offenders of high notoriety, or cases similar nature.'

This basically means I can't travel out of Birmingham or Montgomery without a lot of red tape, and long delays. For example, to travel in some places requires at least 30 days advance approval.

Why now after my trip to the House Judiciary Committee, my appearance on 60 MINUTES, Tavis Smiley and on the MSNBC-Dan Abrams Show ?????"

THOM HARTMANN INTERVIEW WITH SIEGELMAN FROM TODAY (APRIL 29) HERE:

"What a great and important interview! I tried to attach it, but the file is too big to send. You can download it from the site below. It's from 4/29/08 -- Hour 2. Thom did the entire hour with Governor Siegelman. WTG!" - From: MARILYN NOYES

1. Innocent man = special offender
in Bush/Cheney/Rove world.

And in the meantime, those criminals go around free.

2. I don't know the law well enough, could they prevent him from testifying in DC?
Surely not if there was a Congressional subpoena.

7. The next step could be to send a committee to Alabama to interview him, or to take his testimony
live through a video hook-up. Would either of those ideas be possible?

If they decided to follow another route, no doubt we would see he's been assassinated, however.

6. He talked about this today on Thom Hartmann. He has to apply 30 days in advance.
30 days. He also seemed pretty confident that Rove will be destroyed by this case.

I can live with that.

Citizen Siegelman is an enemy of the people! He slandered the Great Republican(rich)Peoples Soviet, by saying that they stole his election that was (ahem)RIGHTLY(wink wink)won by the (rich)Peoples Heroic Republican Soviet Candidate. Citizen Siegelman will pervert the clean minds of the people with his vile slander of Dear Comrade Rove and the heroic (rich) peoples attorneys of the great Republican Christian Corporate (rich)Peoples Republic of America!

22. Here is Special Offender guideline that 'applies':
Apparently this is the section of the 'Special Offenders' guidelines that 'they' are saying Siegelman falls under:
a.. PUBLIC CORRUPTIONS/NOTORIOUS OFFENDER
1.. Persons in public service, either elected or appointed, whose offense is both substantial in scope or impact on the community, involves a violation of trust or a misuse of authority.
2.. Persons who have a high degree of recognition in the community.
http://www.prp.uscourts.gov/uspopt/po_Special_Off.aspx

Personally, I think it's a stretch.
