Wal-Mart to cash tax rebate checks for free
Source: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc unveiled plans on Tuesday to entice U.S. shoppers to spend their tax rebates in its discount stores, offering to cash the checks for free and saying it has cut prices on staple items such as cereal and lunch meat.

(snip)

Wal-Mart has cut prices on basic items like shampoo, juice and sports drinks to coincide with distribution of the rebates. It plans to announce more price cuts in coming weeks.

(snip)

Retailers are eyeing the rebates as a way of boosting business, and many have plans to get shoppers to spend the cash in their stores.

Sears Holdings Corp is offering a 10 percent bonus if customers convert their entire stimulus check into a Sears or Kmart gift card. For example, if the check is $600, Sears will give consumers gift cards for $660.

8. Ready, SET, GOOOOOOO....
Hurry America, hand your money over to one of the largest Fascist corporations in the entire world!
These Fascist freaks are responsible for shipping more of our jobs to china than any other corporation in American history, bar none. It's almost treason to give one dollar to those evil corporate thugs.
GO to All American Clothing.com and keep your money in America and put an American to work for a change, it all starts with good progressives like us at DU. to set the example.
Regards.................

9. As I would imagine most retailers will
Once they get you into the store and then get you a fist full of cash, they hope nature takes it's course and you will spend it right there.

The more they can do to get you to part with your money in their stores, they will do.

Not the poor people who spend it the same week. It gets consumed as profits by business.

Not that that is a bad thing

15. Sports drinks are a basic item???
I must be out of touch - I'm still drinking water.

Of course Walmart -and other retailers - are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and a wish to make their customers' lives better /sarcasm.

21. I'm no fan of Walmart but why the angst?
If they charged fees to cash these checks how many of you would complain about predatory practices profiting from the plight of the poor?

Are the poor so stupid that they cannot use Walmart's free cashing and then simply use that money to buy whatever they like wherever they like?

Or should people NOT take KMart or Sears' free money if they have a need or desire to buy $660 worth of goods at those stores? That's a new fridge with $60 worth of it coming right from Sears. Why is that a problem?

At least that is what I was told by Payroll. If you have a direct deposit payroll account, you rebate check will be automatically deposited based on the last two digits of your SS #.
