Democrat Edwards Wants Iraq War Case Investigation
By Mark Egan

LACONIA, N.H. (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards called on Saturday for an independent commission to investigate if the Bush administration misled the U.S. Congress in making its case for war with Iraq and demanded an end to "war profiteering."

The senator from North Carolina was responding to remarks by former chief U.S. arms hunter David Kay, who told Reuters after stepping down on Friday that he had concluded there were no stockpiles of biological and chemical weapons to be found.

"It's a serious issue and it's why I have called for an independent commission to investigate the discrepancy between what's found there and what we were told before," Edwards told reporters in New Hampshire before next Tuesday's primary.

Edwards voted for the congressional resolution authorizing President Bush to wage war against Iraq.

Asked if he felt the Bush administration had misled lawmakers when making its case for war, Edwards said, "That's exactly why ... we need an independent commission to get to the bottom of this."

1. Well we could have investigations into
What did they know and when did they know it about 9/11, Where were the WMD's, who broke into the computers at the Judiciary committee, who outed Mrs. Wilson. Maybe the war is in Washington and not in Iraq? Between the Democrats and the Repuks? This goes round and round. Lets get behind a candidate and go forward.

2. There doesn't need to be an investigation ...
It's pretty freakin' obvious if you play footage of last year's SOTU and Powell's presentation to the UN, up against what they're saying this week, that the BFEE hosed all of us - including Congress.

5. It used to be, but now it's only a crime if a Democrat lies to Congress
Republicans get a free pass.

6. Welcome to DU!
That cracked me up!

Seriously though, people are sworn in when they testify before Congress so it should definitely be impeachable.

It will be pretty hard to prove that they lied though, because it would require a smoking gun memo that said they *knew* there were no WMD's and said there were.

If they were just stupid and wrong, all we can do is vote them out of office...

8. Speaking of smoking gun documents ...
Not sure if it is still up or if it got "cleaned", but there was a transcript on the State Department website of a press conference given by Colin Powell in late February of 2001 stating that Iraq was contained, no longer had WMDs, and their conventional army was in no shape to threaten their neighbors.

Anyone know if it is still up?

4. They didn't hose me or 12 million other protestors
They knew it was bougs, we knew it was bogus and they did it anyway. And there's not a single Democratic legislator who voted for the "war" who didn't also know, or they deliberately ignored our demands.

I will never accept the excuse that "I didn't know it was bogus" when there were 12 million people on the streets of the world who knew better and went out of their way to get the message to the legislators

7. THANK YOU CRONUS
I cannot forgive Democrats who voted to allow our unelected piece of shit "president" to use force in Iraq, knowing full well it was all lies. They put their political careers above the interests fo their country. It was indecent and there is no excuse I can accept.

10. Colin Powell is a LIAR
"We had a good discussion, the Foreign Minister and I and the President and I, had a good discussion about the nature of the sanctions -- the fact that the sanctions exist -- not for the purpose of hurting the Iraqi people, but for the purpose of keeping in check Saddam Hussein's ambitions toward developing weapons of mass destruction.

"We should constantly be reviewing our policies, constantly be looking at those sanctions to make sure that they are directed toward that purpose. That purpose is every bit as important now as it was ten years ago when we began it. And frankly they have worked. He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors. So in effect, our policies have strengthened the security of the neighbors of Iraq, and these are policies that we are going to keep in place, but we are always willing to review them to make sure that they are being carried out in a way that does not affect the Iraqi people but does affect the Iraqi regime's ambitions and the ability to acquire weapons of mass destruction, and we had a good conversation on this issue." Colin Powell

When did Powell say this? February 24, 2001. More than a year before his presentation at the U.N., Powell knew that Saddam didn't have any WMDs and knew that Iraq wasn't a threat to its neighbors. He knew that the sanctions and inspections were working. He knew, when he gave his speech before the U.N. that everything he was saying was untrue.

14. If they were threatened
then they should say so and we can investigate that. Those who voted for the IWR did so because Bush* was a "popular wartime pResident". I have a difficult time supporting anyone who was a.) incurious enough not to demand real proof of WMDs, or b.) felt aligning themselves with BushCo was the politically "safe" thing to do, or c.) abrogated their responsibilities as a representative of the people on a subject as important as waging war on a sovereign nation, and handed them to a power crazed, uninformed dry drunk who stole the office of the presidency.

11. I agree completely.
People must think we are stupider than dirt if we are to believe that they were "misled". Yes, they technically were misled, but everyone knew the score.

Certains Dem hopefuls, should they get nominated, better hope the war is not a big issue in the general election because they don't have a freaking leg to stand on and they know it.

15. That is the very same problem I have with all those people.
Hell, WE knew it was bogus. And I believe it was 15 million protestors, although I could be wrong about that. But, being one of them, I'd read enough, studied, listened, researched, observed, and put two and two together sufficiently to come to the conclusion that this war was for shit. What was wrong with them, then?

It's a BIG problem for me, too, Cronus.

12. Feb 2002
Nothing more needs to be said. Joseph Wilson reported back to the office of Richard Chenney that there was not enough evidence to support the claims of Iraq-Niger uranium buying and selling.

Sept 2001- Donald Rumsfeld ordered everything to be swept up, he wanted to point the WTC at Iraq.

Wesley Clark has said that he was called and asked to say that Iraq had something to do with the WTC. When they could not produce any evidence to support that claim he said he could and would not do it.

Feb 2003 - Colin Powell before the UN presentation threw the prepared text up in the air and said this is bullshit.

June 2003 - Paul Wolfowitz said in an interview in Vanity Fair magazine that the bureaucratic reason for the war was WMD, that is what everybody agreed would sell it.

March 2003 - George Bush stood before the nation and stated that a war was still the last resort and that this could still be averted, 2 days later we invaded.

March of 2002 - George Bush plows into Condelezza Rices' office and says "were fucking taking him out" in reference to Hussein. This was reported in Time magazine.

1997 - The PNAC wrote to President William Jefferson Clinton and urged him to invade Iraq. The authors of that letter are the cabinet of the current administration.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

They lied!!!!! With intent and malice.

16. I want an investigation into Edwards spin-machine
He was so gung-ho for the war, I'm surprised he didnt' sign up to go fight himself. This is the biggest spin I've seen out of Edwards' camp yet.

Sickining, the guy has the blood of thousands on his hands and he wants to question himself? He won't fool me, he never will, and he'll never get my vote.
