McCain likely to be outspent in election
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - He backs an unpopular war in Iraq, represents an unpopular political party and is endorsed by an unpopular president in the midst of an economic downturn.

As if that's not enough, Republican John McCain could be heavily outspent by his Democratic rival in the U.S. election in November to succeed President George W. Bush.

For every $1 the Arizona senator has raised, Democrat Barack Obama has raised $3. Hillary Clinton, unlikely at this point to beat Obama for the Democratic nomination, has raised two and a half times as much as McCain.

<snip>

"I can't emphasize enough how terrible the political environment is for Republicans," said one Republican strategist who requested anonymity to speak candidly. "It is dreadful."

1. This makes me smile.....

The only thing is, McCain won't need a huge warchest, he'll have the full cooperation of the M$M. I just hope that money will be enough to counteract that.

4. We're already seeing the M$M line up for McSame.
Example: Wall-to-wall Rev. Wright, what Oprah thinks about Wright, what people think about what Oprah thinks about Wright, blah blah blah.

But after McSame called on the League of Nations to deal with Iran, we heard hardly a peep from them. This will be just like 2000. Reading every fax from the Republican noise machine over and over, constantly attacking the Democrat, while the Republican gets a pass at every turn.

8. I couldn't agree more. I just hope that Obama has the kind of warchest
that will immediately put any lies and distortions to rest quickly.

11. I think there are a few differences, though.
The number one difference that comes to mind: there wasn't a massive, vibrant Democratic Underground in 2000, or all of the other sites which daily attempt to cut through the mainstream's bullshit.

Millions of Americans no longer trust their televisions to tell them the truth. We're getting better at not rising to the bait, too. I think Obama's patient and thoughtful response to the Wright issue is instructive: make the other guys look like assholes by using the smear as an opportunity to talk about something the Republicans can't.

And that list of somethings the Republicans can't talk about anymore is quite large: honesty, morality, fiscal responsibility, compassion, minority rights, and so on and so on. Like caged monkeys, there's nothing the Republicans can throw that they didn't pull from their own dirty asses--and millions of us out here on the Internets are waiting to point that out.

No Republican talking point can stand up to the watercooler test anymore. What average American--we who are now poorer, less secure, stripped of savings, homes and privacy, underinsured, underemployed, and fungible--is going to listen to some right-wing authoritarian squawk about how much worse things will be with a Democratic President? We're already fucked, and (except for the 23% percent of Americans who are Nazi lemmings) we all know exactly who fucked us.

A few tens of millions of informed voters can shift a lot of weight, because these days, if you're informed and not getting filthy rich off the blood of our children, you're a Democrat.

13. You laid that out pretty good there.
There are only two types of Republicans - wealthy people and suckers. While it is true that the media tools have already started their cheerleading for a third Bush term, they will not succeed this time.

2. Watch the flanks
The RNC has something like $70 ,million in the bank, and the DNC,
in the words of their own treasurer, is often running on fumes.
You can fund a LOT of Swiftboaters with $70 million, and they will.

This is one of the reasons why the bulk of my contributions so far
this year have gone directly to the DNC. I'll give what I can to the
nominee, once he or she is formally decided, but a wounded beast is
most dangerous when cornered, and the Republican Party at this point
is nothing if not that.

5. NO SHIT.
Obama's got the largest fundraising base ever. Why this spin, which started with HRC. That means he's got people support. Waaa, Waaa, WWaaaa, let the cry babies begin their whining about what the PEOPLE want, about how the people vote...with their pocketbooks.

10. Cindyrella won't tell about her fairy godmother.
Prolly cause her benefactor is actually a minion of Satan, feasting on the misery of the middle class.

9. That Does Not Count the BILLIONS in FREE AIRTIME McCain Gets from the MSM
A 3-1 fundraising advantage is nice, but means almost nothing when the Repiggies own ALL the TV networks and nearly all of the radio networks and newspapers.
Add about five BILLION to the Repiggies total to account for that.

14. Aha - trying to manage expectations already.
Downplay your team's chances so that any blip on the radar screen becomes viewed as an upbeat indicator for the future. Down so far it looks like up to them.

But we dare not get complacent, guys. It's NOT in the bag.
