Venezuela Upbraids U.S. Over Terrorism Complaint

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela Sunday rejected U.S. complaints that it was not doing enough to fight terrorism and said Washington should set an example by bringing to justice "terrorist" foes of President Hugo Chavez who are seeking U.S. asylum.

"We share the concern over the fight against terrorism, but we demand reciprocity," Venezuelan Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel said in a statement released in Caracas.

He described as "surprising" comments made Friday by a U.S. counterterrorism expert, who said Chavez's left-wing government was dragging its feet in aiding global anti-terrorism efforts.

"The Venezuelans can do more than they are doing now," Cofer Black, coordinator for counterterrorism with the State Department, said in Washington. He urged more cooperation from Caracas in exchanging intelligence information and bringing terrorist suspects to justice.

Rangel replied: "Precisely in this area, we have been asking for more cooperation from the United States to bring to justice those who have committed terrorist acts in Venezuela."
