BSE (Mad Cow) fears spread to Canadian Forces in Kabul | CBC
BSE fears spread to Canadian Forces in Kabul
Last Updated Sun, 25 Jan 2004 18:59:55

KABUL - Canada has temporarily taken tonnes of U.S. beef off the menu at its main military base in Afghanistan because of concerns over mad cow disease.

The Department of National Defence issued the order to quarantine the meat after reviewing a recommendation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

There's no evidence that the steaks, prime rib and other beef came from animals with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

But the meat is being locked up in freezers until officials find out more about it, including the age and history of the cattle that were slaughtered.

3. Where do these always unnamed scientists get off
saying that only cows older than 30 months get bse? The media never questions them on that statement, or anything else to do with this horrible disease.

***************

Another must read is "Fast Food Nation". It doesn't have much about mad cow specifically, but it does a great expose of the food industry and what they do to the food we eat.

Be safe and remain healthy. Buy locally produced organic food.

6. Well, usually cows older than 30 months show symptoms of BSE
But they can be infected and infectious since birth. These scientists and the media are telling a half-truth and hoping the average American is too stupid to figure out the other half.

7. "But they can be infected and infectious since birth."
Do you have a link for the claim that they can be infectious since birth? What research showed this? This would be an astounding finding - I can't believe it hasn't been circulated widely.

8. Haven't you heard about the issues with cow blood in calf formula?

Google it then. It's probably one of the most active prion 'vectors' for BSE in the United States. It was one of the huge loopholes in the last set of BSE guidelines. It's one of the reasons so many countries aren't taking any meat from the US right now.

Here's a link to get you started:

9. It is not as question of whether it can be passed to calves
It is a question of whether the calves are immediately infectious - all the evidence so far says no.

As for instructing people to "google it" - nice try. That's not how it works. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. It is up to the person making the claim to provide the documentation.
