A Nova Scotia doctor now living in the United States claims he was brutally sodomized by guards at a California detention centre where he was held under suspicion of car theft.

Ricky Chadda, 34, said this is just one of many atrocities he's endured as a result of a four-year-old case of mistaken identity.

Mr. Chadda, who moved to Los Angeles in 1996, said he's tired of covering up the threats directed at him by San Diego officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, formerly known as the INS.

Mr. Chadda, who's of East Indian descent, previously chose not to speak to reporters about his detentions in 2001 and 2002 for fear of worsening an already bad rapport with federal officials.

1. Mistaken identity is why he was arrested...

But the responsibility for his being assualted lies with the individuals who committed the assualts and the people running the prison/jail for not preventing it. I know I'm being picky about the wording, but nobody deserves to be assualted in jail or prison, except possibly sex offenders(if you believe in an eye for an eye). I'm as sympathetic to the guy in jail for possession of weed as to the doctor who was falsely arrested.

Inmates who assualt other inmates need to be sent to isolation or supermax facilities.

Our prison systems are corrupt, but nobody cares because apparently they are "just convicts" who deserve any kind of abuse inflicted on them. Makes me wonder why we even spend money to have a legal system at all. No need to go to any effort to dispense fair sentences. Just throw them all in a gladiator ring and have them go at each other. Or let the guards do it themselves. :(

Other militarily-ascendent countries have tended to create empires. In the case of the U.S., however, it appears that we just want to be the barbarians.
