UK firm to end India experiment

IANS< MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2004 12:07:04 PM >

LONDON: Call centre jobs exported to India are returning to Britain following a major U-turn by a home shopping firm.

Shop Direct (formerly Kays), which employs 1,200 people in Marshall Street, Leeds, opened the centre in Bangalore in March 2002, transferring 250 jobs from Britain .

But its service has been attacked as being poor and the experiment will end when the office is closed next month.

Jobs will be moved back to six call centres in the North and Wales -- Newtown, Widnes, Preston, Burnley, Bolton and Worcester.

though i disagree that western companies should transfer jobs to india..indians are humans as well...and to offer them jobs and retract them is just as callous as when it is done westerners...also if you know anything about india, generally people stick with a company right out of undergrad and grad school till they retire...so if a person has dedicated 5 years to this company they have to start from the beginning and with uneployment as high as it is its not so easy

3. Well
I understand your argument, but the call centre exodus is not good for British workers and as the companies are British, based in Britain and selling in Britain I think they should bloody well support British workers.

There are some excellent Indian call centres and I fully support any moves to grow the Indian economy, but not at the expense on British workers.

4. Good
I hope this happens to all the others too. And I hope that the "America hating" (or in this case UK-hating) execs who make these decisions loose their jobs.
