U.S. army probes fatal shooting of Iraqi family

TIKRIT, Iraq, Jan 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. army said on Monday it was investigating the death of a family shot in their car in central Iraq this month, an incident which has stoked anger against American forces.

At least three people died in a hail of heavy gunfire near Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown, on January 3, on a highway used by many different units of the military.

An Iraqi survivor said a U.S. military convoy opened fire on the car.

A U.S. military spokesman said on Monday commanders in Baghdad had asked for a probe.

"This is a formal investigation to determine whether there is any criminality," Master Sergeant Robert Cargie, of the 4th Infantry Division based in Tikrit, told reporters.
